M is for motorcycles and SA is for automobiles. I don't know about the exact testing method, but you want an SA as some places may not let you run an M helmet. General idea: M is for only one or two heavy hits while SA is for pinballing against a rollcage.

You need to understand one thing: the track/event organizers establish a standard for the helmet. Nobody give a rat's patoot what you think: your helmet either meets their standard or you go home. Period, end of discussion.

With that said, SA2010 will be the best buy. Many events require Snell SA (automobile) certification. Most allow the last two certifications; that is, SA2005 and SA2010 are currently legal. When the next Snell standard comes out, probably in 2015, the 2005 helmets will not meet many organizers' standards.

It's your money; spend it any way you want.

one of the better deals I've found...im in the market for a helmet too: http://www.saferacer.com/zamp-racing...productid=2405 The free shipping is attractive too.

From my understanding, M helmets are not fire retardant, SAs are.

Try the HJC CL-16, Snell M2010 approved.
I wouldn't use it for motorcycling though because a lot of people complain about wind noise with this helmet.
However, since we are inside a car, it doesn't matter.

I have a CL-15 and it is comfortable. However, do not get the CL-15 because it is only Snell M2005 approved.

I think I only spent $100-120 for my helmet (it's been a few years now) and it was Snell rated..unsure of the exact number but I'm guessing 2005 being that I bought it in 2007ish.

I didn't realize $500+ helmets existed. How do they justify that cost, R&D?

factors:
brand
exotic material ie carbon fiber
paint scheme ie custom airbrush
hand made in usa in japan or in china etc
customized shell (different outter shell for every size) rather than 1 shell and thicker/thinner padding
wind tunnel testing (wind noise), certification testing, venting design
faceshield coating, anti fog, UV protection, thicker faceshield
premium because valentino rossi has one
