90% of the people that had black smoke coming out of their exhaust ended up having their motor blow usually about 1,000 miles later. I don't think anybody was able to get it covered under warranty cause Honda said that they didn't break it in properly and that it was their abuse that caused the engine failure. Better be careful.

lol JK. If you waited till 600 miles before you did an VTEC'ing, t hen you should be fine. 600 miles is the correct break in point.

I'd like to know why black smoke comes out as well. I was driving behind a silver S2000 when he punched it and there was a trail of black smoke that came out. Not that much but it was still noticeable. Oh and it didn't even go into VTEC when the smoke came out. He was just accellerating kinda hard up to before the engagement point. Car sounded stock. I've never actually seen black smoke come out of my cars exhaust.

TTSUPRA,

Two things:

1. Yep. Black smoke and deposit on exhaust tips here too. Interesting observation though is that I have about 2000 miles on the Neuspeed exhaust and it seems like the black deposits on the exhaust tips are much more noticable. Don't know why.

2. As far as breaking in the VTEC, the way I was taught (which is the super conservative way) is not to engage it (do not pass 6 grand on the tach) until the first 1000 miles. Then, occasionally start adding about 1000 rpm every 200 miles to how much you punch the car until you can comfortably go all the way on a 1-2-3 acceleration.

Hope this helps, although it sounds like it's too late if you've already hit 8,500 @ 600mi. You should be just fine though. Cheers. -KM.

No VTEC is ever enough VTEC BABY!

No seriously. Just do things gradually in terms of how much you push the car this early until you work yourself comfortably up the the red line.

Excellent "made him crap post"....LOL

600 miles is more then enough mileage to properly seat the oil skirt ring....and this is the goal Honda and you are trying to achieve. If you VTEC a lot before 600 miles, or prematurely change the break in oil (high in Molybdenum), piston sealing may take a few miles longer. I would have to ask if either of the posters had the smoke occur while cornering? If the oil level is over full it is possible to suck some oil into the combustion cycle, this results in a characteristic black plume. It will go away when the oil reaches a normal level. I looked at a car about a year ago with this problem in Nevada. Turned out the owner was paranoid about oil. He checked it at every fill up and would top it up. Problem was the motor was hot at the station and the oil was still "hanging high in the motor". If it was even a tablespoon low he added. I had him leave the car for 2 hours and check the level......surprise...surprise....surpise .

Another problem solved.......
