OK, I got the fog lights and front grill courtesy of tenblade, and everything is working and looks great. The only thing I want to do is wire the positive from the switch to the parking lights. Reason being, I can just leave the switch on, and as soon as I turn on my parking lights, or lock/unlock the car, the foglights will work. I cant find a fuse to link it to, and I have no idea which wire to tap into under the hood.
I would prefer to have a wire that is under the drivers door sill to keep the wiring more out of site, but any help will be great. I also would rather not splice into factory wiring, so if anyone can come up with a different suggestion, that would be even better!
Thanks in advance,
John
PS: Extra thanks to Tenblade for the great price and packing/shipping on the parts!!
I really recommend running a separate wire from the battery (with inline fuse) and use either one or two relays to switch the lamps. Relay 1 will be triggered by the parking lamps (so you can tap that from under the hood at the actual lamp connector) and Relay 2 with new wire which itself runs into the interior compartment that you'll use for the separate on/off switch.
The fog lamps are pretty high wattage, if I remember correctly! Just my 2 cents!
On the fuse block are three unused terminals. One of them is Always on, one is On while the car is running, and the third is on with the lights. I don't remember which is which, but it's in the Helm Manual or a seach should turn it up. Or 20secs with a meter. The Switch WILL work with the car off. So just test the three leads, one will be on with nothing on, then turn on the lights one click and see which one has power.
As mentioned I would use that circuit to trigger a relay that turns the lights on. You should be able to wire a switch inline before the relay inside the cabin. It would be similar to the way I hooked up my MacGyver windscreen.
Here is the schematic I drew regarding my windscreen.
You would be looking at the top line of stuff, ignore the bottom line and the controller box. You are interested in the headlight switch, fuse, toggle switch and relay. Through the relay (Like I show the bottom line of stuff) you would run the dedicated power that goes to the foglights.
So the bottom run on my drawing for you would be the battery instead of the brake pedal. Then put in an inline fuse. Then to the relay as shown (don't tee off anywhere like I did.) and then to the fog lights where I have the controller box. Don't worry about any of the other wiring to the control box in my pic.
Ludedude, yes. I just turn on my parking lights, or headlights, and the foglights go on. Also when I lock/unlock and the parking lights flash, the foglights flash too! I can still turn them off with the switch in the car, but this way, if I forget to turn off the swithc, they will go off when I turn the lights off. If I wired it to another power source, I would have to turn them on and off every time, and I would probably forget one day and kill my battery if I leave them on.
OK...I figured it out.
It looks like the main relay was by the heatshield, and got too hot. I moved it up by the battery, and about an hour later went out to my car to get something, and it was working again. Looks like I will have to see over time how it holds up, and possibly isolate the relay somehow to keep it from frying!
Replace the relay. Once they go flakey, they don't just start to magically work. It is likely to short out and kill your battery.
I had an alarm and remote start installed on my truck. The installer broke a relay and it kept engaging the starter and not actually starting the truck (until the battery would drain.)
