I can buy off on the guy's reasoning that he was preparing for track use. That being said I'd be surprised if it hasn't already been tracked a bit. Not too big of a deal as these cars are built for it and he took the right precautions to ensure the motor lasted. Heck, most track guys take care of their cars better than some unfortunate DD clowns that go 8k between oil changes, don't change their trans/diff fluids, etc.

Its really a case by case scenario on any deal. Bottom line is that you can't expect to buy a sports car with 100k to be flawless. Unless you go lower mileage and significantly up your budget you're taking a chance with whatever car you buy. Just pay the mechanic now to make sure you shouldn't need to pay him as much later.

I agree that retainers usually means the engine has been really over revved and this is an AP1 so why AP2 retainers?

Was the car tracked?

The current owner tracked it once he said. He also bought it in January and it spent a lot of the time in his garage while he was doing the head work, etc. I'll guess he bought it with 95K+ miles on it, who knows what happened before then.

Just for reference, what do you guys think a car like this should actually sell for? We all agree it's too high but what is a fair price?

you might as well just go for it, when was the last time you seen a "babied" S2000. Look at it like this, all the shit you will need to do from a 60k+ S2000 is already done for you lol. Do a compression test, and a vacuum test. Then get him down to 10-10.5$$

You know you'll probably make less power than stock with a lowered compression engine.

I'm not buying the "engine work" story. People track their stock engines all the time without upgrading the headgasket. My vote is either FI or damaged engine causing the need for upgrade.

See if you can coax his s2ki.com username from him and search all his past posts.

I told him I'm passing on it today. After reading these posts and thinking about it a little more, I did not have a good gut feeling and would need feel good about the sale. I appreciate all the input here!
