Default Help with OEM Rear Spoiler Install

Ok, Honda's installation instructions for the new trunk springs might be the absolute worst I have EVER seen.

I installed the rear wing spoiler without too much trouble, and was able to remove the existing trunk springs very easily with the Honda tool. Installing the new springs has been another issue altogether.

Can anyone offer any insights? I am pretty close to my wit's end at this point. AGHHHHHH!

I am starting to feel pretty mechanically inadequate...!

Here is the section from the Honda instructions regarding the springs. Can anyone provide their interpretation of it? Right now, without the springs, the trunk seems to weigh just shy of a ton.

Thanks...

I called our local dealer and spoke with one of the Service Manager's who let me speak to a Honda tech, who basically told me they are a bear to install. I gave it a couple of more tries this afternoon, but left my garage with my head down in shame, as I phoned the Service Manager back up to schedule an appointment on Monday to have them install them ...

Do you have the spring tool? Or are you using something else? You can do it without the tool if you use a very large set of channel lock pliers. I would think that since you removed the old ones that you can just trace your steps backwards to get the new ones on.

I know that it's a bit late now, but most people do not use the heavy springs that come with the rear lip. They don't really do much. All you need is for the trunk to "pop" when you release the latch and the old springs do that just fine. I now have the OEM wing on mine but before, I had something even heavier. Never needed the stronger springs.

Do you really need them?

Does your truck stay up when you lift it?

I made one attempt to put them on, (I am pretty handy with tools and working on my car) and I managed to smash my finger pretty good #$$#%$#%%$, so I put the stock ones back in and that's that.

I do have the Honda tool - and removing them was pretty straightforward.

Without them, the trunk seemed a bit on the heavy side, so I figured that Honda provided them, therefore I should use them. Maybe not the most wise decision in hindsight.

When I take it in on Monday, I am going to watch the Tech to see what I was missing. When I spoke with him today, he did say that the Heavy Duty Springs provided with the spoiler are more difficult to install (which is to be expected I guess!)

I just hate not being able to finish it myself.

Gfacter, no you don't really need them. And yes, the stock springs will hold the trunk lid up when it's up. It's not like the springs are ever strong enough to lift the lid all the way up anyway. They're only there to pop the lid away from the catch and an inch will do this fine.

Pitt, since you are currently "springless", yes, you may as well put the new ones on. With the lip on, it is still not heavy enough to prevent the lid from unlatching. In this particular instance, Honda didn't really need to provide these springs. They don't always do the logical thing. If they did, they'd also sell the same diff fluid that came with the car.

I hate messing with any type of spring - D A N G E R O U S!

You don't need the spring tool.

I didn't have the rear spring tool to replace the springs. But, I used some rubber tipped plyers, and got the old ones out no problem. The new springs really make the trunk pop up. It pops up much higher than it did with no wing and the stock springs which I like. If you add the wing and don't put the new springs in, the trunk won't be able to hold itself up after you open it. It would be a good idea to add the new springs.

My full write-up with additional pictures:

OEM front lip spoiler and rear spoiler installed. Looks great! Pictures

Jason - can you try to describe how you installed the new springs (based on the instructions above)?

I have been starting with the left spring (without cushion) by 1st inserting it into the left trunk hinge arm (per the picture in the instructions). I have been then trying to twist the other side on using the tool. It just does not seem to want to stay seated.
