Default HELP! Plastic piece of undercarriage came off...

For many of us fortunate enough to have winter beaters instead of daily driving our S2K's through the rough winter, this is a non-issue. However, for those like me who have the S as an only means of transportation, driving in the snow is a must if you live in an area anything like mine.

Long story short: we had a rough snowstorm over the weekend and the plows struggled to keep up with the snow. They focused on major roads before finally starting to plow the secondary roads, which is when i ventured out for the first time. It turns out the plow plowed partially off the road, and due to a light covering of snow still I could not tell that it was not the paved surface. Basically, I drove off the road partially without realizing it and I got stuck in the mud, with my back tires spinning freely in both forward and reverse.

I sat and wondered what the best course of action would be, when luckily a state transportation service patrol pickup pulled up. He helped tow me out, first with a tow belt (which did not work) and then with a chain looped around what I believe was my rear axle on the driver side.

I was inside the car steering as he towed me out, when to my horror a large plastic piece of the undercarriage came out from underneath my car just as I got back onto the paved surface due to the deep snow in the area he towed me through. I put the piece in the trunk and thanked the driver for the tow, but now I am faced with the problem of reattaching the plastic piece.

Obviously if Honda decided to put a large piece of plastic under my car, it isn't there for no reason, so I'm looking to put it back on as soon as possible. The problem is that I'm not sure how to go about reattaching it. It is a symmetrical plastic piece about 3 feet wide and a foot and a half long. Also it does not appear to be broken at all but I'm not sure how it was held in place in the first place...any ideas?

I'd be more concerned about possible damage to your rear axle. Next time use the tow hook.

Its probably the wind deflector that connects to the bottom of the nose. If the whole thing came off, you either sheared the clips that hold it on or the holes in the bottom of the car that it clips into.

And if it ever happens again, use the tow hook for a light pull if you get stuck. I'd be wary about yanking the car around by an axle.

The rear axle is fine, for that purpose I agree he should have used the tow hook (I didn't hook the chain up), but the surface was icy enough that it did not require much force to pull my car out. I only noticed it was hooked up to the axle after I was towed out.

If it is the wind deflector you mentioned, any idea what a repair would run me from a dealership?

Why don't you post pics of the part that came off so we can see it. Maybe its just clips that need to be replaced, maybe more.

I'm betting it is part #9 or #10. You should be able to tell if the mounting holes are damaged. If not, then you probably just need to order some bumper clips, part #19. If the holes are ripped out, you can use some washers between the bolt/clip and the plastic piece. Easy fix on a warm dry day with a pair of jack stands.

Did he pull you out backwards? I thought front deflector too but I don't see how the front deflector would come off from the chain...unless the deflector snagged the ground.

I'm lost (easily done)...pics would really help.

It sounds like he was towed out backwards. The rear edge of the deflector probably dug into the snow and it ripped right off. It may have been missing some clips and hanging low to begin with.
