I was told to stay with phillips/mcculloch bulbs and not cheap generic bulbs. what's the difference between them?

 

The price. Bulbs arent the thing to worry about. Its the ballasts. Ive used Mculloch (spelling) in the past and have had great results. People claim they arent very good, but Ive installed about 15 sets on BMWs, Hondas, VWs, and never an issue. They run about mid 200s on ebay with warranty.

OEM japanese car bulbs (all japanese cars with xenons) are made by OSRAM (which is Sylvania.)

Go with Mculloch, and save the money.

 

but if i upgrade to 8000k bulbs...i could just use my stock balllast right? so i could go with whatever bulbs?

 

why do you want to go up to 8k? youre actually losing usable light......thats why most OEM hid kits run 3500-4500k, becuase its the brightest, and has the mostr useable lght band.......

please dont tell me youre moving up to 8k becuase "its bluer" thats just gay....you get HID because you want better visiblility, not because you want a blulebeam of light.

 

i ran 8000k on my S and i liked it better. you don't lose noticeable amounts of visibility either. i'm running one eye 4300k and one eye 8000k currently (the other 8000k blew out on me). brightness is similiar besides the fact that 8000k has a blue hue instead of fluorescent.

and yes, i like 8000k better because they look better IMO. let's not run over my preference/opinion because you think otherwise.

my 8000k currently was purchased used and after 1 week...one eye went out on me. the 'cell' looking part of the bulb looks to be burnt. so i was just wondering if this is common with no-brand bulbs.

You can run 8K, but it WILL burn your ballasts out faster. Stock OSRAMS are only rated for 6K.

 

First of all, you have no idea what you are talking about. Obviously you've been misinformed or just guessing. Brightness is NOT anywhere near similar. How old is the 4300K capsule in one eye, I mean HEADLIGHT? And how old is the 8k capsule you are using?

The amount of hours on a capsule have a significant result on their Lumens. Lumens being the amount of light produced from the capsule. The older they are, more lumens are lost but you gain more "color". The newer they are the brighter they are but with less "color". It's a trade off. You probalby think the 8K is brighter due to being newer and the having the old 4300k to compare to.

Stick with stock, OEM Phillips part# 85122 rated at 4300K or the Osram/Sylvania rated at around 4300k if you want the "color". Osram tends to be "bluer". Or go with the Phillips Ultinons, but they are pricey.

The difference you ask? 8K is a waste of money, it's not stock, it's aftermarket and will not last as long and will look horrible after about 100 hours or so. Also price, you can get stock NEW capsules on ebay at $50-$60. akinaboy on ebay, i get all my capsules from him.

Rice if you ask me, but that's just my opinion.
