Default High oil consumption with synthetic (10W 30)

Went from no oil consumption with dyno oil to 1 quart per 3K miles on my 04 with 19K miles. Any commments or thoughts? Also, what is thinking these days on sludge buildup with conventional oils. If this is no longer an issue I might go back to conventional (dyno) oil. SG

Hmm, that sounds odd. The AP2 (04+ models) had a revision so they don't burn oil like the older ones did. I would imagine something is not right. Of course, it's not recommended to switch to a synthetic once you've been using a standard oil, but you don't have that many miles on it. I would say to just switch back to the 10w30 you were using and see if the problem persists. Your engine may have gotten use to the thicker style of the mineral oil as oppose to the sythetic leaving your tollerances loose enough to burn off synthetic.

Oh and sludge buildup shouldn't be a problem if you use a quality oil like mobil, redline, or amsoil.

You should go back to conventional oil. As for sludge buildup, this can happen with synthetic oils, too. It shouldn't happen unless you leave the same oil in there for way over 15,000 miles. So, if you change the oil according to the maintenance schedule, sludge formation should never be a concern regardless of the type of oil you use.

Quaker State from the dealer. Ihave never heard any logic as to why not to switch from dyno to synth and u can't break a car in on synth if u want good ring seal. Honda does not recommend going to synth till at least 16K. I don't know if I have a problem or not but it doesn't seem like it should go from no consumption to a quart in 3K. That's night and day difference. Thanks guys, SG

conventional oils don't build up sludge any more than a synthetic. a good conventional oil can protect just as well as a synthetic.

Another myth. You can switch back and forth between dyno and synthetic as much as you want.
