Default High speed wind noise

Having just bought a MY2000 and driven it home on the weekend I was very surprised at the noise at high speed. I wasn't expecting silence, but wow,

Its deafening.

So loud in fact I stopped to see if I had any earplugs with me, sadly not so I grit my teeth and pressed on. I had to laugh today when clearing out some stuff and I found the previous owner had left earplugs in the cupholder. I wish I'd found those earlier.

The main culprit seemed to be higher pitch sound from the forward part of the softtop (leading edge?) I'm wondering if some adjustment would help although it doesn't look obviously out of place to my untrained eye.

Its a bit of a disappointment as I was expecting it to be much better than it is at speed, certainly no chance of listening to music regardless of volume etc.

I'm interested to know if this is normal, can anyone comment on wind noise above 120mph / 200kph?

Sounds like your latches might be getting weak. You could try upgrading to hardtop latches, or you could put some cloth or foam material in the latch to help it seal better/cut down on rattles.

Also get some shin-etsu grease and lube up all your seals. that makes a world of difference.

Needless to say, what you're experiencing is not normal.

Good luck

Thanks, I did notice that the latches don't seem to add any tension to the system. I wasn't sure if they were purely a safety catch or meant to pull taut and tension the roof.

I looked briefly for a way to adjust the latches but didn't see anything obvious.

Are the hardtop catches shorter, or adjustable?

I'm not noticing rattles, its purely a wind noise problem. It starts becoming a bit intrusive at maybe 90mph and gets pretty severe at high speed.

I don't think the hardtop latches are adjustable (don't quote me here, as i don't have any experience with them) but they form a much tighter seal than the soft top variety. This is a common upgrade for fellow owners with your issue. I'm about to upgrade myself because my latches are rattling like crazy.

I just recently traded out my soft top strikers for hardtop strikers, and they did perform better...

I was a little surprised that the difference in tension was not substantial... They definitely made a difference for eliminating wind noise on my hardtop though...
