higher final drive for ap2's?
ok i'm not entirely sure what the final drive on the ap2 is, but i think its 4.3, now isnt one of the reasons that its basically just as fast as the ap1 due to shorter gearing? lets say it didnt have to shift to 3 to get to 60mph, wouldnt this help its 0-60 time considerably?
now my question is, what if it was fitted with a 4.1 final drive? say from an nsx or something, does anyone know if this is possible, and how much longer it would technically make the other gears since they are shorter than ap1's?
just a thought
thanks!

as xviper pointed out, both cars have a 4.1 final drive gear.
it's the primary reduction gear in the tranny that is slightly shorter. 1.16 in the ap1 and 1.20 in the ap2.
i understand what you're trying to get at, but the main reason the ap2 actually shifts so much sooner is the shortened redline. 8200 vs 9100 rpm.
for example, let's say the ap2 went to 9100rpm. there'd actually be very little difference between the shift points of the two. so really, the reason the ap2 is "short shifted" compared to the ap1 is the lower redline.
this is basically what balances the two out. neither is faster than the other by any discernable amount.

I also have been considering a higher rear ratio since I do a lot of highway driving. Previous discussions have been on lower gears and better 0 to 60 or quarter mile times. I feel that I will wear out my car keeping it over 4500 RPM for long trips on the highways. Are higher rear end ratios are available?
with X-viper,and Wisconsin;0-60 time saved, would be = to the time it takes you to shift, from second to third. Not worth all the trouble to play with the gears;in your case,I would consider an SC.

A stock S2000 going legal speed limits is at or below 4000 rpm. This is NOT excessive engine speed. Even guys with 4.77s on the highway are below 5000. Keep in mind that with a redline of 9000 (8000 for AP2), running around 1/2 the rev range is not considered high. 4500 rpm cruising in 6th gear is not going to wear out your engine prematurely.Have not heard of any suppliers with less than 4.10 gears.
but really, even my parents >60 yrs cruise over the speed limit. Lets just say some cruise in excess of 90 - 100 mph on "open roads" for extended period of time, that really puts the revs up there.

IMO and I think this has been proven. You do MUCH more damage to the engine during acceleration, especially hard acceleration than on the highway, even if you are cruising 100+ at 4500rpm+ and lets face it, the Arizona desert or the Texas plains can get pretty boring unless you are doing 100+. Not that I do it.
And with 0-60 times, I think the ability of the driver is what is most important. not .1 seconds difference even though I know someone will always bring it up. he he
my .02
