Default HKS exhaust? LEGAL????

are hks dual exhausts legal?

the reason? i was just pulled over for expired tags, and he said, he won't write me a ticket this time, but my exhausts are illegal. I told him Honda installed them. passed inspection but he said they were still illegal and the next time he sees me, he is going to write me a ticket.

We'd all be arrested in Houston if aftermarket exhausts were illegal. I'm not sure what sound levels the state of Virginia has to enforce, but the HKS isn't really loud when compared to the single exhausts.

The policeman might be bluffing, or he might be right.

a ticket for what? I would like to know also, because i got pulled over before and the cop told me that my Hiper was loud, and it was illegal. I'm sorry the HKS Hiper is quieter than some V8s out there. Sorry this $#!+ really PISSES me off.
Ah... much better

An S2000 running a straight pipe would be quieter than most Harleys...

I would call (or better yet visit) your local police precinct, and ask them if they have a local ordinance relating to pass-by decibel levels. If not, ask them what the state level is. Either way, go borrow a good dB meter from a car audio shop, and do a couple pass-bys to see what you're at. Make note of this (write down dB levels at speed and what not, and keep a printed copy of the ordinance in your car), and if you ever get stopped again, kindly show it to the officer and tell him to take his "illegal exhaust" claims back from whence they came (namely, his ass). For what it's worth, your car *will* pass any pass-by, even if you had a Ti exhaust - pass-bys are done at a constant speed so the S2000 will be fairly quiet under these circumstances.

I got mine about 2.5 years ago through a group buy on the "old"site. At that time some comments were made about the exhaust not being USA legal. I do not read Japanese and have no idea what the information in the box said. Good luck.

This is what i got from someone in the Virginia Vehicle Code Department:

"There is not decible level specified in the Code. Replacement (or other aftermarket) mufflers simply are not to be any noisier than the original equipment was. If there is a difference of opinon (as between a vehicle owner and a law-enforcement officer, for example), the question of whether the aftermarked muffler was or was not noiser will be determined by a judge."

Pretty Vague huh....

Very vague. Hope that the officer in question was just being a dick, and take your chances with a judge if it ever comes up again, I guess...
