Default Homeland Security & Auto Buying

I haven't bought a car since before 9/11. Is it true that, under the Homeland Security laws, when we buy a car, we now must provide dealers with identity specific information, like social security numbers, driver's license numbers, home street addesses, bank account numbers?

If so, is there any way around this?

I was told that, even in a cash purchase, they collect the info.

Thanks.

They have ALWAYS done this. It's no big deal. Most of that info is needed to transfer the title or registration to you... as well as all transactions over of 10k or more have been flagged for years. It's no big deal... really. Who are you afraid of... the dealer?

It is a true...I work for a dealer.

We never asked for bank account #, but you do need to provide name, address, bday, and SS to double check you arent wanted by the FBI and other agencies

Wouldn't stop me from buying a car (unless the FBI was looking for me), but it is rather slimy. If they're going to send your personal information anywhere, they need to tell you. My dealer made me sign I form just so that I would be briefed on their privacy policy, which said nothing about a federal warrent check.

Every car that I have bought require this kind of information. Not bank account #'s though.
If you are financing the car through them, they have to run a credit check with this info.

I'm afraid of everybody. Or, more precisely, I do not trust anyone with my identity specific information. Whenever someone asks me for my Social Security Number, it sounds like they are saying, "Take all your money out of the bank, put it in your fireplace and set a match to it."

I don't recall that this information was required for a cash deal in the '90s, but I understand what you are all saying and I thank you for the resposnes. If it's a Federal thing, then I don't think any dealer would forgo it. So, if it has to be done, it has to be done.

Again, thanks.

I found this strange too. The dealer wanted to run a credit check even though I was paying cash. When I asked him why, he said it is because of the patriot act. So I had to sign the credit check form.

Cash deals have been flagged long before 9-11. I believe it started with the war on drugs...

I know during the 1990's if you had 10k or more of total deposits or payments within one month your bank they had to send the federal government a notice.
