Default Honda Tops F1 Sponsor Chart

Honda Tops Sponsor Chart
March 8 11:06
Honda is the biggest sponsor in F1 spending over $200 million on the sport

"Of over 200 sponsors who pump money into Formula One, Honda has emerged as the biggest spender, with a massive $210 million put into its two-team engine programmes, according to a report published in F1 Magazine.

Honda does not own a stake in either British American Racing or Jordan, the two teams which use the Japanese engines. But it does have comprehensive F1 facilities in both Japan and Britain and engineers based at BAR in Brackley.

The biggest team owner in the chart is Renault, which is second in the sponsor list with a reported budget of $170 million. Toyota, newcomers to the sport this year, entered the charts in third, with a reputed $140 million in sponsorship, but this figure is expected to be more if investment and marketing costs were included."

The dollars spent and costs of F1 defy my imagination... when I throw out some numbers to friends who follow other types of racing, they always come back with "That can't be."

A lot of industry sources claim that article (originally published in F1 racing mag) got the figures all wrong.

I find it very hard to believe that Honda outspends Ferrari by over 100%. Especially when they only build engines. And one would think the additional costs of supplying engines to two teams would only raise their costs a very small amount. As most of the money is spent in R&D.
