Default The hot tranny tunnel

I was changing the trans oil the other day and took my first good look at things in that part of the car. Looks like there is plenty of room to add some insulation to stop the heat problem. Its all bare metal there so i was thinking maybe som velcro glued in place to the metal and some foil backed insulation. Has anyone tried this already b4 i start experimenting?

The Honda engineers may have considered the conduction of heat to the chassis as part of the transmission cooling solution

To transfer heat, the tranny MUST touch something else ( like a heat sink ) ( Example: The coolant in your radiator wouldn't have lost heat if it was away from it !!! It must touch it !

Another sheep thinking Honda engineers are almighty.

Thermatec sheet ($12 for 12" X 19"), could give this product a try.

Been there, done that.

I couldn't find foil-covered foam insulation (at an affordable price) so I got some 1/2" closed cell foam, made for thermal/sound insulation, and glued a foil-paper to one side of it. Then covered the under-car side of the tunnel with contact cement and glued it in place. I used metal-foil AC duct tape on all the edges to try and keep the dirt & water out of it, and to keep the air stream from peeling the foam off.

It made a noticeable difference in the amount of heat radiated into the car in the summer time. The funny thing is, the metal tape on the driver's side of the tunnel has never come unglued, but the passenger side must have different air flow patterns, because I can't keep the metal tape on there for more than a few weeks, so I gave up. But it doesn't bother the foam insulation, it's stayed in place for 18 months.

What, you don't like the secret drink warmer that they included in your car? Brew some coffe or tea while you're driving.

Thanks for the info and jokes guys. I will be giving modifrys solution a try and see if i can improve on it a little, maybe by attaching porno to the outside of the insulation for the heat reflecting improvment and something else to look at when i'm underneath on my creeper with greasy hands
