Default How to buy auto insurance?

Anyone know of a good impartial 3rd party reference as to what you have to consider when buying auto insurance?

For example, at what point does it make more sense to not have high liability insurance? I was once told at a certain level of coverage it is cheaper to get the absolute minimum and cover the difference with an umbrella policy etc.

What gotchas do you have to look out for when comparing rates? For example, a recent quote from Geico was quite a bit cheaper than my current insurance (with State Farm). Other than the obvious differences (likelihood to pay out claims, ease of making a claim, etc), is there anything else I need to be aware of in the fine print?

I just switched to Geico because they have a "weekend" car rate. Paying about 90/mo with a beater truck as a primary vehicle. 25 yrs old, single and 1 speeding ticket.

I decided to never go with Geico, ever since I found out they use your money to buy radar detectors to donate to traffic cops so they can raise insurance rates. Oh, and they push to outlaw radar detectors, too.

(If you don't believe me, use your favorite search engine with the words geico, radar, police.)

State Farm has been excellent with claims, and seems to be fair with pricing and discounts. I've happily stayed with them for many years.

Most liability umbrellas have a minimum limit of liability requirement on your auto insurance and it is definitely not the minimum limit. Also, the lower the auto limits the umbrella requires the more you are likely to pay for the umbrella as that policy is more likely to kick in.
