Default How do the s2000's drivetrain problems compare to other cars??

I've been reading post for the last 4 hours, mostly about drivetrain failures, and there are alot of them. A whole lot. This didn't particurly suprise me, as i have my own problems with gear grinding and notchy shifts. What does bother me is that honda is getting away with it, and we are getting stiffed. I sometimes wonder whether honda knows how many big and little problems their little roadster has? I would like to see some numbers for comparison, mainly numbers comparing drivetrain failures of cars like the miata all the way to the other spectrum, some american cars. To compare these cars to our beloved S should yield one of three HIGHLY!! inconclusive results. 1# We are lil cry babies and need to back off 2# The failures are up to par with everybody else and we just didn't get the reliability we expected from honda. 3# The failures are attrocious and some legal action MUST be done. My bet is between 2 and 3, closer to 2. I'd say honda has some week parts and needs to put out a TSB on them. Any opinions on this, or a willingness to start a petition to send to American Honda?? Thnx

There is a TSB for the gear grind in the library on this link

https://www.s2ki.com/article/articleview/85/1/1/

TSB55.

Notchy shifts can usually be helped with some new tranny fluid every now and then. The notchiness is imo just a sacrifice that we get from having such a sweet close shift.

BTW I am not defending Honda's customer relations in anyway. I am currently in the middle of trying to get Honda Australia to recognise my buzzing clutch. These guys are their own breed.

I vote for #1. The only exception being the #4 cylinder failures, which appear to be few and handled in a fair manner.

I'm tired of reading: I can hear my clutch while decelerating, woe is me. I sometimes hear the convertible top creak, ohmygosh. I don't clean the plastic rear window and now it looks like crap, must be Honda's fault. I try to overpower the synchro's while trying to speed shift, transmission must be bad. I ran in VTEC for over 2 hours straight and the bottom end overheated, duh. I shifted from 5th to 2nd at redline, Honda owes me a new engine. Grow up or get a Miata.

Most stuff I see is people who don't know how to drive or take care of their cars. Americans need to stop looking for a way to sue every company they do business with. It's amazing that any companies want to sell their products here with all of the ridiculous lawsuits filed against them.

Last year, on the Viper forum, there was a "rash" of rear diff grenades. It was only a handful of owners but by the way they posted about it and the way people responded to it with their own issues, you'd think that every damn Viper ever sold had weak diffs. Problems get posted. That's just a fact of life. Non-issues are BORING! How many S2000's exist? How many are registered owners here? How many have drivetrain failures? Percentage? If it were more than 5%, I'd be alarmed. So when you say "lots", is it really? Or does it only "seem" that way?

Personally i think that a weak clutch and rear end is just a poor selling point on honda's side. The # 4 cylender problem and "notchy" transmission i believe to be a real problem. Just my opinion though. Honda built a car to handle the power it came with, and built it only to handle that power under moderate loads. In this respect, they lived up to there end of the deal. I just wish they had gone the extra mile. Oh well.
