Default How exactly is VTEC retarded?

As we all know (or most of us anyway) the engine will cut out at about 6,000 RPM if the temp gage isn't at 3 bars. Is the mechanism associated with water temperature, or oil pressure? I'll be damned if I can figure it out from the Helm's manual. I believe it is a fuel cut-off.......anyone know for sure?

P.S. If you don't know don't guess, I already did that!

Most companies and two of the three of the Honda bikes I have, they cut fuel. If they cut the spark, you could damage the engine by having too much fuel in the cylinder and it not being able to compress it. Fuel is the easiest way to cut the engine off. The next question you have to determine is which cylinder do they cut off. I would have to guess the front cylinder.

Oil pressure is initially higher at start up and gradually as the oil thins the pressure drops off and flow increases, so I how could it run off pressure? I think it is more logical to use water temp or oil temp. Just sharing my thoughts.

No apparent oil temp sensor, so we have guessed it is water temp.

The ECM has a built in rev limiter to prohibit high revs when engine is below reasonable operating temp. It has nothing to do with VTEC. Its just a good idea to let the engine warm up naturally before revving the piss out of it.

Side note: it cuts fuel at the injectors to prevent soaking the combustion area during a "no spark" rev limit. This prevents huge backfires and fouling of plugs.
