Probably a good example but weren't the first MR2's fast backs? I saw one at a meet near the dog track in La Marque, Tx last year. It was around a '92 model? Or was that a completely different chassis?

the last gen was a roadster, the MR-S. horrid looking and underpowered IMO

What are those?? Geees, kids!

"Those" are the classics that started it all, or at least helped make the idea of a roadster fashionable. By todays standards, you'd probably find them to be slow, harsh, and utterly unreliable but they were a total blast to drive. You could also fix 99% of any problems you may have with them using not much more than a 10 mm wrench, a straight slot screw driver, and a pair of pliers.

You guys just don't know what you missed!

Steve R.

So far, everyone is listing examples of purpose built convertables, but no one is answering the original question asked by the title of this thread.

My answer is 17, that's how many purpose built convertables there are. Did I get the right answer?

I think there needs to be some definition here -- by purpose built, they were designed & built ground up as a soft top.

Some of the cars listed here were/are sedan based turned to coupes, turned to soft-tops.

The Porsche 911 is not a ground up convertible.

How about...

Morgan Aero 8
Morgan Plus 4
Lotus Seven
Chrysler TC...

Well I feel sorry for ya if you have never seen some of these...

Here, take a look, some extraordinary stuff here, and almost all of them came into life as a drop top only.
