Default How much does it cost you to own an s2k ?

Well, my S2000 is in my garage since last december, due to really high taxes, insurance and gas cost here in Greece.. So, I was curious how it is owing an s2000 in other countries..

Here we go then.. (keep in mind that the average salary here is about 1000$ and now they want to make it 780$ in order to conform to the IMF and that a MY2003 ap1 costs about 13.000$ and a MY2007 costs about 19500$)

1) Once a year, you'll have to pay tax for just moving your car around public roads according to engine's capacity. So this year, for the s2000 it's 870$.. Last year was 790$ and every year goes up about 10-20%..

Here's a list for 2012, so you get an idea ..
1358-1548 cc - 320$
1549-1738 cc - 350$
1739-1928 cc - 395$
1929-2357 cc - 870$
2358-3000 cc - 1160$
3001-4000 cc - 1445$
4001 cc and above - 1735$

2) If your car's capacity exceeds 1929cc you'll also have to pay extra "luxury tax" which is 320$

3) Insurance per year (MY03) -
Full cover - 1580$
Minimum cover+ theft cover - 800$ - only covers others if a crash is your fault and if they steal your car you get 12.000$ .. you won't get a single dollar in any other case.

4) If you move around the city it's ok.. if not, you have to pay tolls which cost from 4$ to 5,5$ each. When you go to an other city, you may have to pay 5-6 of them.. They also have placed them right outside of the city, so if anyone lives a little outside and works downtown, he always have to pay 2 of them. One when he leaves home and one when returns.

5) gas here costs at the moment 10$ per gallon and no intention for getting less expensive

6) In order to own it , you'll have to show to tax office, income greater than 11800$ per year (15800 at least because 4000 are required in order to show that you maintain yourself) If not, you get more taxes ..
If you have an other one car with 1600cc engine, you need extra 7.000
If you're so lucky and also own a house, you need extra 10.000 for about 80 square meters

Example:
If I get 25.000 and I have 2 cars and a house.. Tax office wants to see 4000(for maintain myself)+11800(s2k)+7000(1600cc car)+10000(house)= 32800$ income .. I am taxed for the difference of 7800$..

That simple!!!!!

It's been 5 months since I gave my licence plates back to government and not moving my s2000 at all..
Not because I can't pay, but I do not want to pay those who steal us everyday!!

So, how thing are going in your country...??

Insurance in the US varies a lot. Refer to all prior insurance threads.

Again, in the US it depends on where you live. We have toll roads where I live but they're really just for convenience in most cases.

Just over $4/gallon here. Prices vary within the US for gas as well.

New York, USA
1)<$100 / 2 years registration & <$40 / year state inspection
2) Goes by curb weight, not engine size. However, cars with really poor fuel economy may have a gas guzzler tax. AFAIK, this tax is only paid once in the lifetime of the vehicle.
3) Varies a lot
4) Varies a lot
5) http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx Add about $0.25-30/gallon for premium
6) N/A

I heard taxes in Greece were getting out of hand, but man, that's high.

In the state of NC, there is a yearly county property tax of ~5% on the value of the car, plus a state registration plate fee of ~$40, which requires an annual inspection, ~$35. Insurance varies by driver and state but in the USA its typically ~$80-$200/mo depending on type of coverage and driver.

Gas in NC is ~$4.20 for premium, a new set of decent tires each year will run you ~$600. Change the fluids yourself and you are looking at ~$100/yr...

Wow. Just, wow. That's just insane.

In my particular state of the US, registration for a car is about $25 a year, then the county asks for a little over $25, total cost per car is $54 a year.
Insurance, of course, varies. I pay $700 a year for my S2000.
Because my car is a weekend car not driven five months a year, I typically fill up once every 4-6 weeks and premium has been around $4/gallon, average fillup is 10 gallons. Let's call it $40 a month for 7 months=$280/year.
Oil change once a year at the dealer is $30.
XM radio is $99 a year.
I own my S2000 free and clear, so I have no car payment.

So in my personal case, it costs $1164 a year to operate my S2000. I feel lucky after reading the OP's post.

Hey, can I stay at your house if I get there? Maybe if you charge $870 to put us up for a week, you could get the S2000 back on the road...

Looks like a gorgeous country (I want to see Thermopylae), which I hope is some compensation for all you're going through there.

And that's only what has to do with vehicles..

Just to let you know, once a year we pay "solidarity tax" via our electricity bill which is 6.5-14$ (depends on the area) per home's square meter..
" S O L I D A R I T Y " !!!!! (because our country has a huge debt, so it needs help) .. and if somebody doesn't pay, they cut his electricity..
Couple days ago, they voted for a new law, that if somebody owes to the government more than 400$, they can cut money from his salary, or even his house can be seized..

An other law says that if politicians do anything illegal, they can not be judged as long as they are part of the government and after 4 years, their crimes are deleted !!!!!!

In specific pensioners' categories, they put retrospective taxes, that were kept from one of their salaries, and when they got to get paid, they got 40$ instead of 900$ which was their normal salary..!!

And there's a lot more..

Every time people protest, police uses tons of tear gas or smashes their heads..
In some cases, policemen wear normal clothes and masks, they pass through peacefull protestors and throw stones and bombs made from alcohol, to normal policemen, in order to become aggressive and start hitting protestors..

Tv shows everything they want and never what really happens..
For example, couple months ago, there were 1.000.000 people protesting in our capital.. Tv said there were 100.000 and blamed them for damages at public buildings etc, in order to scare all who were watching Tv, and were ready to leave their homes and protest..

Total madness !!

Really a pitty, because Greece is such a beautiful place, but with the wrong government..
If anyone ever comes for vacation and visit the islands, it's sure he will have absolutely great time..!

Hehe, Norway is one of the worst counties in the world to own a car with a engine thats a bit powerfull...

I payed 38.000 USD for my 2001 (It's more then what the car was brand new in USA!! I have the sales papers for it when it was sold in the states and it was 35k brand new ), Main reason is there are around 20-30 s2k's in the whole country so they are rare and there are so many taxes that you have to pay when the car is registered for the first time.

Insurance is 460 USD a month but thats mainly because im only 20 years old and insurance companies do not like young people with powerfull cars

You also have to pay 520 USD a year to be allowed to drive on public roads.

I don't mind that it's expensive for me to own this car, because I love how nice it looks and how rare it is!
