Default How is it for "normal" drivers ??

(Please no smart-ass flames from Fast And The Furious wannabees ; )

Ok, so I'm a long-time honda owner and I'm thinking of the S2000 for my next Honda. I'm attracted to the car for its sexy look and the reliability of Honda. I know I'm not the primary market for this car. I don't intend to be racing people or taking the off-ramp at 90 MPH. I'm just a normal driver.

Having said that, I'm a bit unsure how I'll like the car, since I'm not normally a RWD owner. I was a bit dismayed to see that the car has no sort of traction control, DSC or ASC like its competitors have. I understand that the racing crowd doesn't want that anyway, and this car largely appeals to racers.
I talked to the salesman who droned on about how cool it is when you fishtail the car and how cool it is to do doughnuts, etc.... NOT what I was wanting to hear, but I guess he appeals to the F&F in most of his customers. Personally, I'd like a car that I don't have to worry about it fishtailing on me.

So, I'd like to hear thoughts on the car from a basic driver standpoint.

Thanks!

It's a blast no matter how you drive it. I've always said that this car has "Civic mode" and "VTEC mode". If you drive in lower RPMs just cruisin' around town, it's Civic mode. VTEC is what puts the on your face!

You shouldn't have problems fishtailing unless you're really getting on it, or unless you give it too much throttle coming out of a corner or on a wet street. I'm a somewhat "normal" driver on the public streets, and have yet to experience the back end stepping out on me. On the track, yes, it's gone out - and around. But I was pushing.

Cool! That's what I was hoping to hear. I'm taking it for test drive tomorrow (didnt have time last night) at Rick Case Honda. I live like 2 miles from their new showroom, which is another appeal for me. Makes it easy to take in for service.

I love Hondas. My two Hondas have been incredible. My 1995 Civic has 196,000 miles on it and I admit I really don't take care of it. I know with this car, I have to do the oil changes regularly, etc.

I dunno if its a testament to what kind of carfeul driver I am or what kind of indestructible cars Honda makes, but I got 112k miles on the clutch in my CRX and I have 196k on the clutch in my Civic..heh....gotta love Honda

You could say I'm a normal driver also. I've only fishtailed twice. Once, because I was really pissed off, and the other, I was just getting on it to much. I've got over 40,000 miles on er, and will tell you that fishtailing is a self control thing. So, forget about all the high tech traction control BS. It's not needed.

Normal driving is fine. Just KNOW you should be shifting at between 4,000 and 5,000 rpms regularly. Its just where the engine likes to shift at.

I don't know why people are so afraid of RWD. "Normal" drivers like yourself won't even notice the difference 95% of the time. The S is a great daily driver, you have to try to do fishtails and whatnot. They won't just happen randomly. Go ahead and buy the car, in 2 days you won't know why even bothered asking this question! Good luck.

My uncle thinks my car is a joy to drive, and hes the type of guy that buys cars based on their looks.

He has a 2.8l Z3 5 speed and he never drives it hard.

Hell, most of the time I don't really drive my S2000 that hard. I shift at 3.5k most of the time. Its just nice to know that if you ever get that urge to have some fun, this car is more than willing to obey.

So if you like how it looks, and like the Honda brand, buy it. Just do us all a favour and take her into VTEC once in a while.

check out the Did your car start today?
and Simple, Owners: How much do you love your S2000

these are two threads that do a great job exploring some of the (+)'s of the s2000. I have to use this car as a normal driver 99% of the time. In New Orleans, the roads are bad enough that you can't safely drive in a performance manner - despite the attempts by many local.

Get the car....
