This might be a dumb question, but why not just remove the shift knob in order to do this, instead of risking painting the inside of the car?

u won't paint inside of the car unless ur really stupid. All u do is just paint the top part a little bit, the tape is there just in case liquid drips slide down. Probably easier without removing since u don't have to hold it with 1 hand while painting.

That was what I did. I am glad I did it. I did spill polish remover and nail polish But I think it's not a big deal if you spill nail polish in your car though because it can be removed with polish remover
