Default How to prevent holes in your top

I have a 2002 and have never had any wear problems with my top. I've read all the posts here about location of wear spots, etc. and think I know what's causing them.

When the top is down, don't put the top all the way down. Give an inch or so before it's all the way down. I've been looking at it, and I can fit oner finger in where the wear hole should be. Now, if I put the top all the way down, it's very tight and I can't fit anything in. I can see where the top folding support is super tight against the fabric, which is normal. Now, having the top down and riding over bumps, etc, is just going to wear in that spot and rub, ie. friction. Overtime, this is going to wear. This is what I think it's causing most of the wear holes. I've been leaving an inch of so after I put the top down, and no holes here.

Just a thought.

I wonder if someone would be interested in making little rubber bumpers that would prevent the top from fully colapsing, but still being close enough for the stock boot to fit? Actually, next spring I might just fab some of these up, I already have a few ideas.

Seems like a simple suggestion, although I won't have to worry about it till like April cause Winter is here.

I think the holes could be a product of the number of times the softop is folded and put back up. Not a staying folded/rubbing wear problem. Repeatedly folding/bending PVC (what the top is made of) naturally creates a weak spot.

I've had my car since '99 and have no signs of wear holes. The top is down more than 98% of the time. Seldom does my top ever get put up. Even during the winter the top stays folded as I use the hardtop instead.
