How to recover from Hydroplaning?
Is there any way to recover once your car has lost its traction when say going down the freeway?
I thought this would be a good post since all the heavy rain in my area just started?
I would assume that just taking your foot off the gas would slow the car down enough to regain its traction?...

I forget if it's different with ABS, but typically you are not supposed to use the brakes but rather try to keep the car in a straight line until the car slows to a point where the tires will grip again.
If you have already achieved hydroplaning, you will have NO brakes, NO steering. The best you can hope for is to let the resistance of the water slow the vehicle down. If the car begins to "yaw" (stop pointing in the direction of travel), you are best to turn the steering wheel so it continues to point in the direction of travel for when you do regain road contact. If it's a long stretch that is pooled with water, then best to push the clutch in to disengage power - 1st so as to not continue powering the drive wheels, 2nd so there is no engine braking when the hydroplaning stops. Continue to slow to a speed where it is safe to re-engage power. If you begin to spin immediately, grab the steering wheel firmly, fingers and thumbs out of the way of the airbag cover, lean back in the seat so your seat belt can take up any slack and KISS YOUR A$$ GOODBYE!
Gotta agree with xviper. There is no control once you get spinning, which I did immediately. Went across 4 lanes of highway before a retaining wall stopped me. Never hit the brakes till the wall was coming at me head on, then the car spun and I hit rear first. The brake disk was in the road in 3 pie shaped pieces. The dealer told me I would not have busted up the disk if I had not hit the brakes. He wasn't behind the wheel when the wall was a few feet from my front-end though.
