Jay has it right, the chip is in the key just above where the metal meets the plastic. The car can be stolen with a few select toys, most notably a high powered laptop, otherwise forget starting it...they'll have to tow it. NO joyriders can steal it, so don't worry about that. The guys that CAN steal this car make more money in a month than you and I do all year, forget about it. If they want it, it's theirs.

Look at it this way, if they steal it, they're probably keeping it, so you get to choose another color....like Silver (which we all know is still the fastest...hehe).

Isn't the whole immobilizer system the same as the one in used in the Prelude? It's an option on the Prelude I believe unless they changed it and the Lude is rated pretty high in theft totals but I'm not sure if those stolen had the immobilizer option installed.

About six months ago, on the H/A.net forum, one of the guys on the Prelude section worked as an Xray tech and took an Xray of his Prelude key. Sure enough, there was a small chip inside the black plastic. He posted a pic of the xray and it was pretty cool. I suspect the S has the same type chip inside it's key.

well to elaborate the low class theives that tried to take my car couldn't get the doors open using a screw driver so they decided to take said screw driver to the back window and i guess they were too fat to get in cause they gave up lol. maybe someone drove by and that was the end of that.

Those chip keys are pretty neat. I'm seeing them on many new cars now. If you loose one you'll pay though. A few months ago I paid my dealer over 60 bux for one key cause they had to program it and all.

A neat thing you can try is get a copy made at any ol' shop. Try it, the car wont start. But if you tape a good key to it (with the key part towards the passenger side) the copy will start it.

I'm not sure how to answer you, because I haven't owned a BMW since the 1997 model. All I know is that I could park the Bimmer locked and with the windows down, and you couldn't reach in and unlock the doors without using the key.

Doesn't this chip in side the key require some sort of power source?

The power source comes from the ignition.

About the Prelude. I suspect the numbers you're seeing are pre-'97 (the year the Immobilizer unit became standard equipment I believe). At any rate, the chip-tpye is different in the S2K than the one in the Lude, but it should be EXTREMELY difficult for anyone to steal ANY car with an Immobilizer unit, remember that this is not a Honda product, the company existed for many years before Honda contracted them, and their reputation is excellent.
