Default I messed up my console... any ideas ??

Yesterday I drove around with my right arm laying on the console -- mindlessly pushing buttons of the radio (station switching) for a while. Today I noticed that the metal piece to the left of the power top switch has several scratches in it -- in fact the finish is worn right off in a couple of places. It must have been caused by my watch band....

If I could get that metal piece off I am sure I could have it refinished ---- does anyone know how to take it off ??

Unfortunately it looks to me like it may be a major operation to remove it...

Thanks !!

Eliot

Never mind -- Rick's site has detailed instructions on how to take the whole console apart -- very helpful !!! There is even a picture there of a carbon fiber piece that could replace the piece I messed up !!!

Eliot, actually I believe their is a clearcoat on that silver trim that can be removed with rubbing alcohol or something like that. It will take care of the scratches and should leave a chrome color.

Here found the link

Hey !! Thanks Dan -- I guess I should tear it apart to do it right -- but MAYBE I will try to do it while it is on the car ... then again -- if I got a shift boot or a console cover from Ricks the whole thing comes apart anyway for the install... I will send you a PM on a diff. subject.

no thanks -- I only need the metal piece and I think I will either clean the rest of the finish off , paint it, or have it refinished somewhere...

I will probably just take the rest of the finish off...

Ok, here's the weird thing. I have seen in person 2 people who have done this. One came out with a nice shine (chrome look) the other wound up with a black plastic trim. So I can only assume that the piece is not really metal but painted that silver with a good layer of clearcoat.
