Default I'm extreme... looking at 4.77 gears

So I think that I've reached the limits of what "cheap" moding I can do. My springs, braces, exhaust, testpipe, ect are all in. I figure that I could either go with gears now, or keep plugging away at things like header and intake for a few HP.

I've been in a couple of S2000s with 4.57 and even 4.57r gears. The whine is simply too annoying for me. I can't see paing $200 more than 4.44 or 4.77 gears for that result.

So, that leaves me with the other two ratios. Unless someone knows something I don't, the 4.44 supply seems to have dried up.

I've been looking at the 4.77 gears. Theoretical top speed is stiol 131 MPH... I rarely see a chance to exceed that. My main concern is RPMs on the freeway, but I've read somewhere that at 80mph you're still around 4700 RPM? That isn't too bad- and would also have the side benefit of taking my car out of the Invidia drone range.

Can anyone with these gears in an AP2 confirm that would be about the correct top speed and freeway RPM? I just don't want to be in Vtec in 6th gear when I'm only going 90mph. Also, how much do these screw with your gas mileage?

Thanks

Well I have a AP1 w/ 4.77's and my milage is still around 25 on the highway. That sounds about right on the RPM's at 80 MPH. If you buy the complete pumpkin from HTG, you might as well have him put in the Comptech reinforcment pieces just in case you go with boost someday. I now wish I had him do that before he sent mine to me.

HTG sells 4.77 gears for 900$ and 4.57 for 590$. Do you know where to get the 4.77 for less $. I also don't know the part # if you get them from a dealer. Obviously ,you have more experience with this than me. But if the car can handle the rpm and the gears as strong as oem, then why not.

If you definitely aren't going boost, is it safe to say that the comptech diff is unecessary?

Not sure where you guys getting your info but I CLEARLY remember my RPMS' coming back from LA.

I have the Comptech reinforced diff with 4.57 gears and Comptech Charger. (not that it matters)

While cruising in 6th gear around 80 mph, you're at a solid 5000rpm.

So with 4.77 gears the logical conclusion is that it will be even higher than that.....sure it's nice not needing to downshift but if u are trying to keep roadnoise down, then NO WAY.

I would say get gears for local driving but if you plan on doing highway stuff stay away from gears.

I'm keeping my stock gear ratios and pulling the diff soon....

4.57's and QuietCar sound deadening underneath and in the spare tire well.

I guess I need to go drive my car more.

P.S. According to this, you will top out at 129 MPH.

The $900 is for the complete diff, not just the gears. The $590 is for only the 4.57 gears. You can get only the 4.77 gears for $375 shipped all over the place.

If you've got an invidia, like me, you can't really hear the whine of the 4.57s
