Default Inline 6 Cylinder S2000 AKA "S3200"

We all know that the S2000 has more than enough room for an inline 6 cylinder engine...heck, the car has fake dual exhausts combined with its rather large front section that causes people to swear it is a 6 cylinder rather than a 4. How hard and how much money would it take to develop a Honda Performance VTEC system on an inline 6 configuration utilizing the same engine speed characteristics as far as VTEC engagement and redline are concerned? Following the common statement that you expect the percentage increase in horsepower for an engine to be similar to the percentage increase in displacement, the results would be astounding. For example, when Temple of VTEC conducted their dyno tests they stated that the extra dyno horsepower from Honda's under-rated engine was not surprising since the 10% gain in displacement (F22C1) over last years engine (F20C1)--> (2.2-2.0)/2.0 = 0.10 = 10% should dictate a similar gain in horsepower. Following this percentage rule an inline 6 cylinder engine performance VTEC S2000 would have two extra cylinders or 50% more displacement, therefore, would put out somewhere around --> 150% X 240 = 360 Horsepower. Let's says this engine was built along with all the other complete drivertrain components which would obviously need severe "beefing" up and also a replacement e-manage for the engine. Let's say someone was able to produce this engine setup successfully, Honda would sue their ass off if they tried selling this upgrade to fellow S2Kers who opted to get this upgrade right? Please leave out all arguments about how the perfect 50/50 weight distribution would be comprimised for this upgrade. This would be a car similar to an M3 as far as engine parameters are concerned but would destroy it on a performance level along with S4s and the like. In summary I posed two questions in my post so you can either address those or you can comment on the post as a whole. Ladies and Gentlemen, let the discussion begin!

It's quite impossible if you ask me. Honda doesn't have an inline 6 platform to work with to begin with (never have, never will), not to mention Japan has phased out using the inline 6 design in favor of the V6 design across the range, thus the discontinued production of popular cult cars like Skyline and Supra.

I never said Honda should develop this engine, rather a super knowledgeable, independent engine/drivetrain builder/developer completely knowing of all performance VTEC engine dynamics along with its electronic counterparts.

It may be a big bonnet but there is also a bloody great cross member in front of the engine.

And where do you get this idea that Honda would sue someone for developing a 6 cylinder? That's crack smokin' talk.

You'd spend a lot of money on more power and totally ruin the dynamics of the car.

As for an LS6, why don't we swap the rear end for a live rear axle and leaf springs whilst we're at it.

I would trade my Z in an instant .. if the SK2 had a 6 in any configuration and came as a coupe.

God .. let it happen. But it won't. hells bells .. the SK2 wasn't even shown at the Honda exhibit at the Tokyo Auto Salon ...

Using a 4 cylinder was a conscious decision to keep weight down, which is why they squeezed as much NA bhp out of it as they could. Sticking a larger engine in there would probably be possible but would screw up the weight distribution. Getting it to 9,000 rpm would be tricky without it being massively expensive though, it's not just a case of sticking 2 more cylinders on either side - so my answer to your question would be "a lot".

It can be done. There are at least two tuners/manufacturers/engineering shops/whatever over in Britain that have combined two Hyabusa engines into a V8. Basically, they only use the heads and pistons of the stock engines, the crank, block, etc., is all custom designed. And they still rev to 14,000rpm.

The original car was conceived with an I-5. I see that as more likely, if anything.

Keep in mind, an I-6 wouldn't have a dual exhaust, necessarily. A V-6, on the other hand, would be more likely to see that. I think the dual exhaust is strictly an aesthetic thing that Honda did on the S.
