Default Insurance Question..

well my friend just bought a used 2003 s2k yesterday.. he bought it under his name, but he wants 2 have the insurnace under his dad's so he won't have to pay as much (he's 21 and has 2 speeding tickets). but when he called his insurnance company, they told him that the car has to be under his dads name for his dad to insure the car. is that true? is there any other way to have the car under a different title and insurnace under different person?? he cant put the car under his dad's or his apr will go sky high since his dad has bad credit. any help appriciated. thanks

It depends on the underwriting guidelines of the company he's insured by. For example, our agency represents several insurance companies. Safeco Insurance Company wants to have all drivers and all vehicles in the household listed on one single policy, with the head of household as the primary insured, regardless of which driver in the household owns each individual vehicle. Insurance company B (Progressive, Geico, Travelers, take your pick) needs to have the registered owner of the vehicle as the primary insured, no exceptions. Law has nothing to do with it. If your friend wants to have his insurance arranged with his Dad as the primary insured, he has to shop for an insurance company that allows this.

However I really don't see why it matters; even if your friend is not the primary insured he will certainly have to be listed as an operator of the vehicle, and thus will be surcharged for the tickets--not to mention the fact he's 21. Also, more and more companies these days use credit scoring to determine your insurance rate. Seems like your friend is better off on his own if Dad has poor credit.

try a different insurance company, because my friend has his car in his name, but insurance is under his dad's name. Though he is the primary driver on the insurance, but it is under his dad's insurance policy.

How should we know what the insurance company told your friend.

But seriously, each insurance company will have different policies. If they say they won't do it then your friend will have to find an insurance company on his own or convince his dad to switch to another insurance company.
