Introduction post into the s2k world
Just added a new '05 S to the insurance, and it is the most expensive of the 3 cars we have. Roughly, it's $1,000/yr for the S, and about 800 each for a BMW and Toyota.
There is either more to this than what is obvious or you live in an extremely expensive area. Liability seems to be one of the highest parts of the total cost to insure.

Shop around. Anything more than $200 a month for insurance (regardless of age) is just crazy IMO. If you have to pay over $200 a month that means to me you need to get a cheaper car. Plain and simple. It also means your A) a young driver, B) have a bad record, and C) both A & B.

$6000 a year on insurance??? That's just nuts. Your monthly insurance payment should never be higher than your car payment
As a 22-yr-old who just got his S2K one week ago and also has an Integra LS, I can tell you that the S2K is definitely more to insure than the teg, but $550 a month is rediculous!
I agree with the post a few up, paying around $200 is about the max i'd be willing to go. In fact, I pay $209/mo to insure the S2K for 6 months and the integra for 6 months. Any more than that and I would not have gotten the S2K.

If you're 25+ with a clean record, then yes... $200 a month should be the max for any car in the S2000's class. However, if you're under 25 or have a ticket or accident (come on, I bet the majority here have at least a point), it could easily be over $200 for proper coverage.
Please, please, PLEASE don't do what 95% of people do and lower your coverage with a lesser-known company to save a few bucks. Most companies like Survival or Geiko try to sell you the state's legal minimum. In California, that's 15/30/5. Now think about that... when was the last accident you had WITHOUT more than $5k in damage? 50/100/50 liability limits should be the minimum, regardless of cost. If you can't afford that, THEN you need a cheaper car.

Entirely untrue.

The point about $200/mo is NOT that anyone can get under that if they look. What we are saying is that it's crazy to pay more than that for insurance and if that's the best you can get, you should probably wait and put your money to better uses than car insurance.

It is entirely true. High rates are caused by age + record + car.

Anywho, I'm just explaining why I think it's okay for me to pay $260 a month for my insurance. I'm 20 and carry high limits (100/200/100) because I live in a very lawsuit-happy state. The problem is that if you're dealing with a respectable company that doesn't use shady means to determine rates, and you are getting quotes with high enough limits... if it costs $250/m for your S2000, it would probably cost you $200 for your Civic.
[QUOTE=sdeucek,May 26 2005, 05:27 PM] ...
My mother has been driving for over 30years with no tickets of any sort, and we decided to put the car in her name and her listed as the driver.

But the problem is that anyone CAN get under that if they look, unless they have something stupid like five points on their record. It's not age + record + car, it's age + record + car + coverage. I've been working at State Farm for over three years now. It irks me when people compare our rates of $250 a month for 50/100/50 to someone like Survival who quotes them $175 a month for 15/30/5.

I'd also be suprised if the high limits are the only reason your rates are over 200... I bet at 20, even with minimum limits + comprehensive, you'd be over $200/mo with State Farm.
