TSB#: 00-0054

Titled: Buzzing from the engine or transmission while deceleration

Symptom: While deceleration in 3rd or 2nd gear, a buzzing or rattling comes from the engine or transmission between 4,000 and 3,000 rpm. This noise sounds similar to a heat shield rattle, and it goes away if you press lightly on the accelerator pedal or disengage the clutch.

Probable Cause: Gear backlash in the transmission which can be minimized by clutch spring dampening."

Background: Clearance between transmission gears (backlash) is normal and sometimes audible. In an S2000, this noise is more noticeable since the transmission is between the seats instead of up front in the engine compartment. When the vehicle decelerates, its weight, together with the pulses from the engine excites the transmission gears, causing them to buzz or rattle. The four springs in the clutch disc hub act as a slight damper. The original clutch disc keeps the transmission very quiet when new, but as more mileage is put on the vehicle, it dampens the noise less and less. At about 4,000 miles, the noise becomes noticeable.

Then countermeasured clutch disc has a different friction washer between its hub halves. If customers request the countermeasure clutch disc, advise them that the countermeasured clutch disc will initially allow more noise than a new original disc, but over time, the noise should not get noticeably worse.

Corrective Action: Replace the clutch disc.

Parts Information: Clutch Disc: P/N 22200-PCX-025, H/C 6521678

So there you have it.

DanB - Thats exactly the TSB they showed me last week.

I had the updated disk put in, and the noise was unbearable. I dropped my car off today, for another one.

But looking at the TSB, it says that basically they have no solution.
Original made some noise, so they told us to replace it. New one makes more noise, but "over time, the noise should not get noticeably worse".

So what? Am I supposed to live with an annoying rattle, buzz, and vibration?

Does this mean that the new disk they are putting in my car today will solve nothing?

This is frustrating!

Pinky it's says under Warranty claim information:

In warranty: The normal warranty applies

Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill.

Pinky, DON'T DO IT. At least not now.
I really didn't notice all that much noise, but since they were taking it all out for the 1-2 grind, they put in the updated one.

After a week of driving on that one, I sropped it back off. Pain the ass.

Hey guys!

Am I the only one who is having a problem with the updated clutch disk making more noise than the original?

Seems like everyone else is happy with the new one.

Figures. That would be my luck!

Well when I can get a printed copy of the TSB I will call up and see if I can get the 1-2 thing fixed(never had a problem), new clutch. Now it makes it worth my while!

Im sure with the hard driving I do the clutch is probably shot! I know at my 30,000 I will need new brakes so I may pick up a set off the net so they dont charge me 2x the cost!!!!

Thanks muchly guys!
