I dropped the car off this morning to have the revised clutch disk installed. I have owned the car for 14 months (12,000 miles), and have had no real complaints other than the loud whrrr-whrrr noise that occasionally occurs when I hit 3-4,000 RPMs while decelerating. Since rain was forecast for early this week, I thought now was as good as time to address the problem.

Since the TSB had been issued, and I was able to accurately describe the problem, they ordered the revised clutch disk last week, so I wouldn

jay1064,

I did the same thing you're referring to. I had the clutch replaced because I had a little "whirring" under decel and had them replace the 2nd gear synchros while the car was there. I thought a lot about this before doing it. After all, I wasn't having a 2nd gear grind problem and the clutch was only a little noisy. I decided to do it just to make sure I didn't have a problem later. The dealer didn't require demonstrating the grind. (Did at first, but changed his mind!) The result has been good. I had a little problem for a few days of 1st gear balkyness sp??, but that has smoothed out and the tranny works fine.

Good luck

Funcar,

I don't think that it was ever posted on the other thread, but I saw it the other day at my dealer's shop and I think that the number was 049. I could be mistaken though. HTH

Funcar:

I'll get a copy of the TSB when I pick up my car. I'll try to have it posted by the end of the week.

I have a whirring too on my car when I decelerate, especially in the 1-2k rpm range. Could this be the sign of clutch problems? My car is 3 weeks old with 2k miles.

Here's the latest:

The service manager just called with an update. In a strange decision reversal, Techline is no longer mandating that the synchros be replaced. The service manager wouldn't say why, but my guess is that numerous 9,000 rpm runs were made, without a single 1-2 grind. However, they are now giving me the option to have it done.

The service manager was candid, saying simply that if the shifter isn't giving me any trouble, then there is no reason to tear it apart and replace the synchros. If I have a problem at a later date, then the car is still under warranty.

Techline did want him to mention that the revised clutch disk would eliminate approximately 50% of the noise - as mentioned here several times already.

They will remove the transmission tonight and replace the disk in the morning. I will stop by in the morning to take some photots which I hope to post by the weekend.
