I tried installing my K&N air filter last night, but had a few problems. Maybe someone can offer advice.

I cut the airbox as the instructions said in the FAQs, but when I tried to position the filter, it didn't seem to want to fit. In the following pic, you can see there are two grooves in the hose, shaped like a 'V'. The stock filter uses the one on the right, but the K&N won't sit in either groove. I can almost get the lid back on, but that would leave a massive gap around the hose outlet from the airbox.

The next thing I noticed was that the filter is just too big for the airbox. It pushes the divider forward about 1/8 - 1/4 inch. Considering the divider on the lid muxt mate with the divider on the bottom, I don't see how it can. I'm not sure if this next photo shows that sufficiently.

And just for reference (for anyone who hasn't opened the airbox yet) here's what the stock air filter layout looks like.

Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome. (Yes, I know. I should have got the JR filter. )

the k&n is too big for it to fit the "v groove." you have it installed properly. anyways the gap isn't that important.

Clive,

I installed the K&N without cutting the airbox. It's going to push a little on the wall inside the airbox, not much you can do unless you cut it (which I didn't want to do). To get a tight seal between the hose and the filter, I bought a $1.00 metal hose clamp from Lowe's. It works OK, but I like Pinky's idea to get a 3" cookie cutter better which will give a more secure connection. I would suggest this! When you put the lid back on, be sure the filter and hose are as far down in the box as they can go then put the lid back on, you'll have to push down a bit. It's a tight fit for sure, but you can do it without damaging the filter or the airbox.

Good luck!

Thanks for the insight, Mike. I've already put a cookie cutter inside the filter neck, and the hose fits fairly snugly over it. As the filter came with a hose clamp, I may as well put that on too. Pity this is such a crude way of hooking up the K&N. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, I wanted everything to fit neatly (which it doesn't). I am assuming that the gap on the right side of the airbox, between the airbox opening and the hose circumference, will have no affect on the airflow - and that trying to make a good seal there won't make any difference to the performance.

I'll try out the K&N for a few days, and if I'm not happy with it, I'll probably get the JR instead.

That depends on whether you are going for a perfect fit or some proven performance gain with K&N filter. Hopefully JR filter would give us some performance gain too like K&N but it hasn't been proven or that I've seen yet.

Let's petition K&N to make an S2000 filter then.

I have a folder full of delay responses from K&N. I bought a Comptech filter.

I finished the install tonight, as VA S2K suggesed. I had to cut a little more plastic off the inlet piece in the top lid, but after that, the lid closed just fine. (BTW, I found that a pair of tin cutters was the perfect tool for cutting the plastic piece out. Much easier than with a Stanley knife.)

Gave the car a test run after the install, but I couldn't tell if there was any major performance increase. The car felt very powerful as usual, but I typically put that down to the SS exhaust and the fact that the air was cold. I'll need to test it for a few more days.

Thanks everyone for your good advice.

Well hopefully K&N will have one that fits pretty soon. I spoke to their R&D department here in the UK yesterday (a friend of mine put them on to me). They are intereted in using my S2000 to produce an air-filter from! So hopefully won't be long after that and we'll have some.

I'm taking my stook there on the 7th of Feb so hopefully a few days later i'll have the very first stook K&N filter ever

I'll get some photo's and post the info when it's done.
