Also, if the filter is dirty, change your engine oil a little more frequently...thats where the dirt is going as the oil doesn't not just serve to lubricate but also; clean, cool, and seal the engine. Yes more dirt is getting through and showing up in the oil...so change it!

[QUOTE=i_heart_my_DB8,Nov 14 2005, 11:00 PM]Off the top of my head (could be mistaken), I seem to recall that K&N claims that the dirtier their filter gets, the better it filters (to a certain extent of course), and that you should NOT wash and re-oil it frequently.

I sell Airraid, Green, K&N, Accel, AFE, and a few others daily. Each one comes in and gives a seminar once a year on how their filter is better, why it's better, why the other sucks, and so on...
They have some points that are valid and usually a few that just leave you scratching your head. Almost all of them will give credit to K&N for laying the groundwork per say, but state they have improved on the Original.
I have seen some things that make me question K&N, but I have seen the others and they don't seem to really have everything going they say they do...
So who's better???
I think there are too many variables to state one is better than another in all cases and to some degree it comes down to preference. We all use facial tissues, some people use Kleenex brand, some use Puffs, ultimately they are all just a facial tissue. One may be softer, one may offer lotion, but in the end they all get he job done to some extent. Is Puffs better than Costco house tissues, depends on your needs and wants...
Stock filters may stop more dirt, but K&N will flow better.

I've always known this, and friends just looked at me stupid when I didn't want to put a K&N in the s2k, which is my daily driver.

Let's see who's upper end engine components are going to last longer

Hmm so stock filter would give okay performance but make your engine last longer while the k&n give a little bit better performance but would decrease your engine lifespan by a little aswell.......

I think I'll just stick with my stock filter......

Here is a link to a site with a very in-depth comparison of a number of air filters. Lots of pretty colored graphs and charts. No surprise that K&N passes the most air, and the most dirt (maybe the most gas too??)
One would assume that the K&N filters used in the test were clean and oiled??????
Several orders of magnitude more dirt went throught the K&N.
Something to think about when reading their adds.

Good post...

Like you said, obviously the K&N won't filter as good as the stock... but that's the sacrifice you make for better air flow. It will be the same with any "high performance" filter.

Anything you do to a vehicle is going to change some characteristic, or function...
Aftermarket parts may cause more strain to your vehicle, but I see most people on here opting to modify their vehicle in some manner. Also w/ that most people modifying their vehicle are also going to inherently drive it harder/faster.
You have to pay to play.
My statement there was just in relation to the kleenex comparison above. If you really want to look into it, the website I posted and the link above this post are great places to start.
