Default Launching the Ap1 vs. the Ap2

Hi guys,

At the risk of being redundant, i was wondering whether or not there should be a difference in optimal RPM for launching the 2 liter vs. 2.2 liter S2000s.

I was practicing launching earlier this evening, and after searching and reading a few posts, it seems as though many agree that 5500 to 6000 rpm is ideal. However, when launching at those rpms and using the "drop the clutch" technique, I have traction issues, but when I launch at 4000 rpm, it seems to grip much better, but still a bit strong.

Due to the increase in torque, would it be more beneficial to launch at a lower rpm than 5500 or 6000? Unfortunately, I cannot time either launch. Can anyone with an AP2 please advise?

Thank you!

It's impossible to say a certain RPM is the "right" RPM for a launch. It's impossible because of different levels of traction with different asphalt/ concrete and the temperature of your tires and the ambient temps.

You just have to feel it out and if you can't you probably shouldn't be "launching" the car anyway.

Exactly right. I've taken my car to the dragstrip on two occasions. I honestly don't know the precise point at which I launched, but I know it changed based on the track conditions. I believe right around 6K would have been my average though, and this is with a bone stock AP2 on slightly worse than stock tires. I managed a 2.06 60' and a 14.1@98.6mph. Not world class, but not bad considering my inexperience.

There was an AP1 at the track on one of those days who ran a 13.9@99mph, but from what I could see he had at least an aftermarket exhaust and drag radials. He mentioned that he was launching above 8K rpms which I thought was a little extreme.

You want to slip the tires a bit to avoid shock to the drivetrain. Manipulate the throttle after that to get traction.

as someone pointed out:

anyone who tells you to "launch between xxxx-xxxx rpm" unfortunately does not know much about launching. there is no perfect rpm. launching rpms are determined by traction conditions. you could be launching 4000rpm one day and 7000 the next. all depends on tires, tire pressure, heat, humidity, track/road conditions, etc.

I agree totally, but if your gonna launch your S alot you might wanna go ahead and invest in another clutch cause thats exactly where your headed. They were built for ROAD RACING.
