Laws on Radar Detectors
Greetings All,
I make get fragged for this but here's a little info from the other side. I'm a State trooper in Mass, and don't work on patrol, and have not for years. I also just bought a red S2000 and should be taking delivery next week.
Please remember a few things. Cops are out there doing what they are paid to do whether or not they believe in the law, it's their job to enforce it. Cops don't get any more credit on their activity sheets for giving you a warning or a ticket so they can do either. It's usually dictated by circumstances and attitude. Short story, 1985 I'm sitting on a 4 lane highway in the grass median strip at 3AM talking with another Trooper parked next to me. No traffic goes by for 1/2 hour then a car goes by and my radar goes off at 117mph! Pull out in my 1983 Crown Vic and know he'll be in the next county before I get to 60 but low and behold he pulls over and surrenders. I go up to vehicle and he gives me the best story I've ever heard in my 24 years. He says. I just bought the car yesterday and called in sick for work today so I could stay home and rest up. I just had to come out here when no one was around to see what the car could do, Check the Vette's odometer and it has only 500 miles on it and he registered it that day. He got a warning for 63mph in a 55zone.
Have never forgotten the story and I may need to use it next week :-)))
Anyway the S2000 is sooo unbelievable I test drove it, drove the Bimmer, and tried to drive a 350Z but the salesman was a dick, so I bought the S2000 Can't wait!
We're not all bad guys and some of us like speed as much as you, but for 8 hours a day the guys gotta do their job whether we like it or not, it's their chosen career. Truth is we drive fast for work, and the speed limits seem low to us personally but we can't change the law that up to the legislators.
BTW we detectives don't get great cars either. Mine issued car is a 97 Chev Lumina with 198,000 and a taxi cab package :-((( Maybe you guys could buy us a few S2000's so we can keep up ;-)
Be safe this Holiday, and enjoy the best bang for the buck ride on the planet!

rjk,
you are the second officer of the law that I know of, that will admit that they like a little speed also. Thanks for your honest input.
I have been caught speeding many times before purchasing the detector(or speed limit reminder) doing 90 in 50, I pulled over immediately, got a warning, county sheriff. That is the luckest I have ever been.
I am an unconscience speeder, I bought the detector to remind me of the speed limit, not to get out of tickets. Reverse thinking maybe? I view it as a traffic safety device.
PJK3,
My RMR 'detector' has not failed me at all. It picks up signals from miles away and from speed traps that I can't see. I don't know about the black widow or any other jamming/defleting device, but someone has to have something that works.

Those of us who live in the Washington DC metro area have the unfortunate disadvantage of living in or near two of the three (last I heard Connecticut was the other) states where radar detectors are illegal. Does anyone know what specific distinctions there are between DC's and VA's statutes? My V-1 is always mounted on the windshield going into DC but so far I have been lucky.
What burns me up more anything else is when I see cops doing things that you and I would get ticketed for doing.
This includes, but is not limited to:
-setting one's speed at 45 in a 35 zone
-not coming to a COMPLETE stop at a stop sign
-not signaling when turning, changing lanes, etc.
-ignoring constuction zone speed limits
-crossing solid lines
-and yahdeee, yahdeee, yahdeee.
I commute 90 miles per day, and I see this $hit all the time, and it makes me so damn mad I wanna scream. I was driving behind a friggin' Texas state trooper this morning who was going a constant 70 mph in a 60 for 25 miles (arghhhhhhhh!). He didn't use his signal for one lane change, nor did he slow down for the numerous construction zones we passed through. How do these a$$holes sleep at night knowing when they're such hypocrites?

as far as building a jammer - i think MacGyver here on the board once said something about having designed a radar jammer, but the costs for the components alone was in the $1000+ range, and the size was quite substantial as well... if you do a search on Jammers - you'll find a plethora of information about how much of a scam they generally are.
best of luck.
and rjk -- i know quite a few honest good guys out on the beat... glad to see another one out there...
it's just a shame that (like in so many things) a few bad apples give police officers such a bad reputation...

S2Crazy,
Maybe you don't realize it but cops are allowed to speed on duty in the performance of their duties whether responding to an emergency or not. Be realistic if cops drove 55mph the roads would all be grid locked. Remember when a cop goes wizzin by you that it's always better to have them in front of you than behind :-)) One Trooper usually covers 100 miles of highway (50 miles on each side) so you know they have to speed otherwise between arrests, accidents, & DMV's etc... they'd never cover the road once in an eight hour shift.
Not trying to justify it, just being honest.
We don't have to like it of course, but truth is nobody ever said life is fair. We all make our choices, and have to deal with their results good or bad.

And, as for you SHUG, that'll only work on the Cape! See you out there.
