You may remember this post (https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...3&highlight=LED) about our experimenting with LEDs for the side markers and turn signal lamps. Our hope is that we could replace all of the auxilliary lamps with LEDs.

Well, the damned things have been on back order for months and just showed up today (only part of the order -- the turn signal arrays). I won't install them for a few days, but did bench test them a few minutes ago with a 12v power supply, and they are very bright. There are 8 LEDs in each lamp array and they are clear when off and a very bright amber/orange when on. They are instant on off, with no linger fade away like normal bulbs.

They have a bayonet mount which will fit the converted lamp sockets James and I have in our Euro clear corners. Here are some photos.

First, a comparative shot of the Eurupean/Japanese bayonet mount amber bulb (which is used with the clear corners sold there), then the US bulb (a clear wedge-mount for use under the amber corners), and finally the 8-LED array (the only problem is the orange trim piece, which I will paint silver, of course).

The LED lighted on the bench, from several angles:

The experiment is finally on... Can't wait to get these installed.

Am I nuts or what?

Just a quick question Rick ... Is the most left bulb from your rear yellow indicators and the LED replacement on the most right fits the original casing with no problems? If so, which is the specific part number? Damn I want these in blue.

Takashi,

The dimensions of the bayonet mount are exactly the same, but your question prompted me to check the pin placement (there are two on each mount, which you can see in some of the photos). The pins on the LED array are positioned 180 degrees opposite each other. The pins on the Honda amber bulb are about 165 degrees. So to get the LEDs to mount properly I will have to do some fooling around. Aside from this small problem, they should fit the casing perfectly. Damn

You might want to also check out these alternatives... They are from one of my motorcycle stuff vendors, www.aerostitch.com.

Hey Takashi blue would be cool but they cost a fortune compared to other color LED's.

I have an electronics catalogue in front of me and ...

A single high brightness orange led costs $2.10 compared to $7.80 for a blue one of similar intensity.

Note: these LED's would not be suitable I'm just listing them for price comparison.

I'm looking at making up LED lights for the HSCC QLD as I get trade discounts with a local electronics supplier.

Let me know if our interested.

as for the pins at about 180 degrees, just take a screwdriver and knock one of the pins off, the other pin will lock it into place

Rick ... Maybe you should try Bshigeta's suggestion, I don't know if it will work if you file off one of the pins but I'm going to attempt to try that probably later since I'm getting nowhere in searching for the right fit bulb / led type.

DHess ... Yeah, anything blue I've found when it comes to automotive or general lighting is exceptionally expensive. Justifys that it probably looks the best in any given fit though so I'm quite willing to pay. I'm currently having a problem looking for front blinkers in blue or white since the pin design of the bulb housing is very unique with little aftermarket stuff especially. The meantime, I'm probably gonna try the filing off one pin trick to see if it works.

bshigeta,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have spare plugs, so I can bench test this solution before mounting them on the car.
