Funny, when I was 16 (about 25 years ago) Mom told me to keep a spare key in my wallet. I have never been locked out of my vehicles for more than about 30 seconds.
And my Dad told me "common sense in an uncommon manner is called wisdom". Go figure...

Actually, running at idle is probably the worst operating condition (under redline) for any car.

The reasons are many...you may want to post this question in the tech forum for the answers. The damage of idling has been written about many times. Just do a search in the tech forum!

Most car alarms have an auto arm when the door is opened and closed. Arming the alarm overrides that feature and locks all the doors. My last few alarms I told the installer that I did NOT want auto arm. I wanted to be the one to arm it. Also, I always carry the valet key in a separate pocket just in case I'm dumb enough to outsmart the system.

If you're a member of AAA, they'll make you a plastic key the size of a credit card. You can carry that in your wallet.

carlson, is that a ramen bag that you have as your avatar??

that probably wont work because a chip is required in the key to start ignition.

"Left engine running for an hour, car just sitting there, any damage done? "

idling is very bad for an engine. consumer reports claims idling for 30 seconds is worse than a cold start. the good thing is, you wont feel any difference until the engine is old. so just forget about it.

This might work for guys but it wouldn't work for a female, because it's highly probable that if you lock the keys in, your purse might be in there, too (as in this instance, mine would've already been inside the car).

As for the AAA key, you don't need the chip to open the door, right? Just to start the car.

You can go to AAA and they will make a plaastic copy of your key. They put it in a credit card size holder, so that it's easier to fit in your wallet. When you need the key, you just punch out the tabs and take it out of the container. I'll see if I can find a picture of it.

If you only want to open the door, you don't need the immobilizer chip.

Yummy, ramen. I don't think I've eer seen that brand here.
