licence plate mounted bike rack
I have been looking into several bike rack options for my S2000. My 1st choice would have been a mini hitch, but Dalan does not make one for the '04 due to its rear facia is different than the '00-'03 s2k's. The Hollywood "original"trunk rack and the Yakima Mighty Joe are candidates.
Anyway, I found a rack online that mounts a small hitch to the rear licence plate (see this link: http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/unliplmobica.html). It seems nice in that nothing really touches the paint. But it requires tapping screws through the plastic bumper and into the underlying metal. I can see some sort of metal behind the bumper but do not know how thick it is. For those of you that have had your rear bumper off, can you answer any of these questions?
1) Can you drill into the metal and tap 4 screws?
2) Better yet, is the back side of that metal accessible so that the hitch plate can be bolted on instead of screwed in?
3) How difficult is it to remove and reinstall the rear bumper?
Thanks for your help!

I have seen them and they look like they would put too much stress in that area. Plus, who wants to drill holes. I raced bikes for 35 years and have always owned convertible sports cars. Get a good quality trunk-mount rack. I've even carried tandems on them.
I use the original Hollywood: http://www.hollywoodracks.com/
It works great. I make sure the paint is clean, then put some 3M scratch free cloths under the foam pads and have not had any problem.
HTH,

I actually installed this plate mount bike rack. It works well but it was a bitch to install.
When you have 2 heavy (mountain) bikes, it isn't very stable so you definitely need side cord to tie it down...... but it's a clean design.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Just a thought. Maybe if you put some sort of clear tape or static cling plastic to aid in the protection at the contact points. I probably wouldn't leave them on just stick them to the rack and put it in the cellar till the next use.
