Which light bulbs when clearing corners - 7440 or 1156?
I was under the impression that we needed the 7440 wedge mount amber bulbs and 194 (or 168) bulbs when replacing the amber difusers in our U.S. housing.
When I had my car in for service this morning, I was curious and just checked to see if they had any amber bulbs. The parts person thought it was a 1156 bulb I needed to replace.
So, do we need 1156 or 7440 wedge mount amber bulbs?

7440 and 168 are the ones you are after but there are alternatives.
I found 168 and 194 amber bulbs locally. I also found a 7443 amber bulb from APC at Pep Boys. The 7443 are a dual brightness used in some brake light applications, however they will work just fine. You will not use the lower brightness filament in our application and the socket won't allow you to anyway.
I also used an orange sharpie like somone else had suggested on stock bulbs. I like the color of these better so I hope they work in the long run. I colored a bulb for halloween one time like this and after prolonged use it started to flake off. I think it was the heat that finally affected them.
I put 12 volts to my sharpied ones last night to see if the orange would flake off. It didn't in only 10 or so minutes and the bulbs were hot as hell.
Does anybody know how the ones you purchase are made amber? Is it in the glass already or are they also colored after the fact?
