You still need to engage the e-brake for the top to operate.
But only one or two clicks. The car can still keep driving.

Correct. What I was trying to say was that even though you disconnect the VSS wire, you still can't accidentally operate the top without the e-brake engaged.

[QUOTE=mad-dog-one,Apr 1 2006, 10:38 AM]I remember a dark and stormy night, in the old days, when my clutch cable unexpectedly broke in my VW bug. I started the car in gear and drove home by shifting carefully without a clutch. I stopped at a few red lights, but that was no problem, I just pulled her into neutral, coasted to a stop at the light and started in first gear when I got the green. I got home just in time to take my baby sister in for her dialysis treatment, drove my dad over for his coronary bypass surgery and got my mom to her mammogram appointment on time. I don't know what Darwin was doing, but that old-time technology kept me warm and dry that night.

Hmmm....didn't have them in the old days....have them now...didn't have them in the old days....have them now. Yeah, I can't figure it out either.

Unless maybe someone did something silly like reached into their car and started it and ran over their little sister or something?
Hah - when I was twelve I started a manual car with it in gear and ran over my sister's foot!

I'm proud to report that I have, in fact, verified that only one click is necessary.

No, I don't think I'll give you a brake at all. People who park their manual cars not in gear are not the norm. Our ebrakes have been known to fail or loosen up as the brake parts get cold when parked. There have been more than just a few posts here over the years where owners have seen or found their S2000's not where they parked it because of just using the ebrake. Parking a manual car not in gear is a bad habit whether you think so or not. It even states this in the owner's manual.

And you think the car won't start and drive away? The "running over the kid" thing was an extreme example only to get the point across, so maybe you give me a break? And you actually think these quirky things can't happen? Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. People run over their kids doing even less obviously dumb things.
In older manual cars, I have been able to start the car, in gear, clutch out, by just cranking the starter motor. The car just starts and drives away.
