They are illegal in every state. The third brake light was mandated years ago. This spoiler deletes it.
That's not true. In Michigan, you are required by law to have 2 operating rear stop lights, not 3. There is no mention in the code about removal of the 3rd brake light.

I thought it was a federal requirement to have three brakelights ???

"high mounted center brake light" is what i recall reading a few years back for light requirements.

Is it really true it just glues on with foam tape?
It does, but I also drilled holes where the OEM spoiler would be and secured it the same way. Hasn't flown off yet

I thought so too, but according to the Michigan vehicle code you are only required to have 2 rear stop lights. I checked the code twice to make sure before posting. I'll check with a friend (cop) tomorrow and confirm.

I have the BYS and love it! Really cleans up the rear end without the third brake light. I don't care if it is illegal or not. We are talking about something that is no more illegal than not having amber colored turn signals or something here. It's not like taking off the third brake light is a felony or something. Since there are so few S2000 around most places I bet most people would just assume that the car comes without one.

I do notice people getting a little close to my rear in traffic though. Since I just got a hardtop and deleted my soft top, I am going to mount some LEDs in the center at the top of the rear glass of the hardtop to replace the OEM light. Should look pretty decent when I am done and solve the whole illegality issue once and for all.

I was considering doing the same thing but mounting them to the windscreen to make it easier to hide the wiring . I think I will wait to get cited before going thru with that though

That is also a very good idea. How do you think the visibility of the light will be with the top up though? Also, the light from it may light up the inside of the car with the top up at night, but that's not a big deal.

Before I got my HT, I was considering ordering one of the third brake lights that come on the newer Miatas and having a body shop mold it into the part just forward of the trunk. Would look pretty cool there too.
