Default Metal trim around shifter

The metal piece around my shifter, and roof button, is "flaking" and looks nasty. How can I make it look shiny and new again?
Thanks

Take Isopropyl alcohol to it and remove the black. There is a nice chrome piece underneath. Do not do this if you have an '02 or newer.

I bought two pieces of stick on titanium trim. One sticks on over the shifter ring. One sticks on over the cup holder cover. I bought them about two years ago from a Japanese company. At that time, I paid $182.00 for both including shipping. Here's a thread about it.

Do I have to remove the piece before I put alcohol on it? Or does it not matter?
