Metallic Tapping and Loose Spark Plug
I just picked my car up from the dealership a while ago. I took it in because the check engine light had come on and it was idling rough and making a loud metallic tapping sound. I was told that a loose #3 spark plug was causing the tapping sound. They replaced all four spark plugs and the #3 coil. I was told that the #3 plug was badly fouled. Also, they said that there were two computer codes reported:
P0301 - Misfire
P0303 - Leaking Compression
Can anyone with a helm manual confirm if these are accurate meanings for these codes? Misfire makes sense to me, but Leaking Compression? It's written right on my service order.
Seems like they just can't ever get anything quite right. I also complained about a whining noise from the differential. I told them specifically (twice) to call me if they decided to change the oil in the diff. They changed it but didn't call me. Really annoying. I wanted to get a sample to send to blackstone as an example of an S2000 diff gone bad. I should have taken a sample of it before I took it in. They ended up replacing the differential. Also, they washed it even though they weren't supposed to. (I was told they NEVER wash customer's cars) grrr... At least they remembered to take a sample of the engine oil.
Does anyone know if there is a way to look up a Honda part number? There are several things replaced that I can't identify, like "STRIKER ASSY" and "CVR, COLUMN".
The striker is part # 86270-S2A-902 They replaced two of these.
The CVR is part # 77360-S2A-A01ZA
Another interesting note. The only time the spark plugs have been touched was when the dealer serviced the car for the 15K mile service. If they were properly torqued is it possible for them to come loose, or did the dealer forget to torque #3?

I realized that. What I can't figure out is if there is a computer code for compression leak, how does the computer know that? Seems odd. Can't imagine that there is a pressure sensor on each cylinder for the computer to read.
While I don't know the codes, I can say that the computer can inferr a compression leak from other parameters such as speed variation during a revolution, acceleration after ignition in a given cylinder, etc.
This is what the diagnostic computer is all about. With a few feeds, it can inferr all sorts of things.

very strange... I just picked up my car today for a loose #2 plug. also they said the o_ring for the tube through the valve cover that the spark plug goes in was leaking oil into the engine. I have never touched the plugs and do not know if they did on the 15k service.
I wonder now if the threads in the head were damaged due to the loose spark plug. Think I'm going to investigate that. BTW, that site above worked to look up the part numbers. For some reason they replaced the Soft-top strikers with Hard-Top strikers. I didn't ask them to, nor did I mention anything about the top, they just replaced them. Wonder why??

One day I was bored and thought that I would check my plugs just for the hell of it. The plugs (all of them) were so loose that I did not even need the ratchet to loosen them, just the socket and the extension. I could not belive it! And down by the plug seat area there was a little oil by each one. The plugs looked fine except for alot of rust on the white porcilin. I retourqed them back in at 15 lbs. My car is a 2000 with 13000 miles. It does use oil between changes, about a quart. My car has not seen the dealer yet for any maint or tsbs. I have done it all myself so far so they could not be responsible for the loose plugs. This definitely does not seem normal and has me wondering if this could be the reason for some of the engine meltdowns???
