Mileage needed for defects to appear?
Someone made mention in another post that if an S makes it past 30,000 miles without a major failure it should be considered pretty well put together. I know this is a bit of an absolute statement so I was looking for a few opinions on topic. I have read posts of tranny failures at 13,000 miles, major engine problems early on, etc. I plan on buying used in a few months and mileage is a serious consideration. At what point, generally speaking, would you consider an S to have proven itself as being well put together and properly broken in, yet still have plenty of life in it?
Hmmm... It just so happens that I have EXACTLY 32,451 miles on my MY2000 and I don't have any problems, does that mean my car is well put together?
Seriously, there are many of us with more then 30K miles on our cars and many of us never had any problems with our cars either. So I guess I don't know how to answer your question. In any sampling of any product, you'll get some early failures, and you'll get some late failures. Each product is unique, there is only one of it in the world. No matter how good my S2000 is, yours may fail the day after you buy it. You can only use the "reliability" statistic as a guide to decide, it is not an absolute prediction that what you buy will not fail. Good luck with your decisions.

Yeah, because I'm sure he thought someone here could give an absolute prediction for when his S would fail if he got one.
"At what point, generally speaking..."
I haven't heard the generalization to which you referred, but if it makes you feel better, mine's at 45K with basically zero problems.
But I can see what you mean. Maybe one failure mode of an S could occur around, say, 15K or 30K. If you didn't fall victim to that failure, then you probably got a "good one". Again, I haven't heard that theory, but I hope it's true, cause that means I'm home free..

Having recently crossed the 100k mile threshold, I can accurately report that my car has experienced more problems than anyone else has posted on this site. It's definitely not something I am proud of, but my car has been through a lot during the last 4 years.
All of my scheduled 15k maintenance intervals was performed by various Houston Honda dealerships. However, I did perform all of the fluid changes myself using the more frequent "severe" condition intervals.
There are many HouStooks that have had no problems at all, and there are others that have had comparable problems as myself. There are too many factors to determine which cars might be trouble-free. Just hope that your car doesn't spend 7 months in the shop during its first four years like mine did.
- A/C Compressor
- 2nd Gear Transmission Synchro
- Transmission Front Seal Rupture
- Driver's Side Power Window Modulator
- Noisy/Vibrating Clutch Replaced
- O2 Sensor/Catalytic Converter
- Short Block Replacement
- 2 Head Gasket Leaks
- Several MAP sensor replacements
- Rear passenger wheel bearing failure

To all that gave some serious thought to this and actually attempted to help, thank-you. I knew going in that there was no exact answer. Computers usually get "burnt-in" for 24 hours before shipment to detect any gross defects, the notion being that if something is going to go wrong, it would have by then. Ask yourself if you have ever had a electronic device fail, it probably did it very early on or very late in it's life. I guess I am looking for something similar in the S. Now before some people start in with the sarcasm, YES, I realize the S is not a computer, thank-you. I am simply trying to apply a concept to something else. If it doesn't seem possible, fine, just throwing it out there for consideration. Maybe I should set up a new thread with a poll, problems 0-5k,5-10,10-20, etc. Still, I do appreciate the opinions.
I hope I don't jinx myself, but I have 58,949 miles with the only problem being a gas cap that kept loosening up (replaced under warranty). I just changed front brake pads at 55K and there was still half of the pad left. Believe me, I drive hard and my S2K has been bulletproof.
