I have misshifted one time. I was on a great mountain road I know about right outside of Blacksburg, VA. It is an amazing road. Anyways, I was downshifting and hit a bump and jammed it into the wrong gear and I was driving very "vigorously" I was already taking my foot off the clutch while I relized my mistake. I briefly heard the tires chirp. I didn't even make it all the way off the clutch before it was back in and I was out of gear. If you respond fast enough you won't hurt the car. In my case it didn't even get a chance to rev at all.

There are many people who have misshifted and dodged the bullet. If the motor sounds the same and it drives fine, you probably did too. Just be more careful and always be aware when downshifting.

Do you know if it redlined?

I have hit third when trying to ram into 5th (very high speed and revs) it did not like that too much and I have slammed the gear walls several times trrying to hard shift too fast. basically I over -rev a bit and then find the gear but nothing major has happened.

This may mean the clutch is hardy but dont take that to mean it is ok to have it happen from time to time. I was probably just lucky or something terrible is lurking just a few miles away from now

My $.02

Damage from a misshift can take a long time to make itself noticed. You may have bent a valve (or 2 or 3 or . . .) slightly or damaged your retainers. To what lengths you want to go to in detecting this is up to you. I would at least consider a compression test and, depending on how bothered my conscience is, have the cover pulled and the retainers inspected for dishing or fractures (I think the cams need to be pulled for this so now you are getting into some $$). Someone posted recently how they were driving in a subdued manner and dropped a valve, despite not having misshifted in months. It is really up to you depending on what kind of person you are and how sure you are that you overrevved. Spend a few hundred now for some piece of mind or wait until you possibly get a rough idle, a CEL, and a paperweight for an engine later.

the damage could be slight but it can manifest itself in months or years....
kind of like a whiplash accident pain can manifest itself months or years after an accident
