Is modding an S2k even worth it?

rijowysock, have you driven an S2000? What don't you like about the stock suspension? Why are you planning to "fix" it before you buy the car? Just curious.
its mostly about ride height(fender gap) and secondly about ride quality

im more of a street driver.. i like to handle well in what i do.. i dont autoX i want SC so that when im on highway i can downshift and get somewhere. i dont race, i dont 1/4 mi my car, and i dont auto X.. i go for looks over "thes best thing for my car"

thats why as soon as i get s2k it'l be gutted and redone.

as for the brakes.. in florida their are ALOT of old people who do the damn dumbest things (thats why we have highest insurance premiums in US) ive been on the HIGHWAY many times and had a old person just cut over a lane or STOP for no reason etc.. so ive learned that not only does a BBK look nice. but when it comes to stopping FAST from high speed without brakes FADING a BBK is more than neccesary. thats just me tho. everyone here mods their cars to THEIR own likes/dislikes thats why we all have different looking cars.. one might do something all for GO. but i do things mostly for what i like. which is a SLAMMED Supercharged sports car on 19" wheels.. with some huge 355mm brakes behind the spokes..

thats just me.. i KNOW more than likely a stock s2k will beat me when it comes to racing but i dont race i just drive to mcdonalds and back. and occasionally take it on the highway

I agree with some of your points. Remember tires are the key to stopping not necessarily the BBK. It helps but great tires will do you wonders.
May I suggest trying a simple rotor/brake pad swap? That will actually help out a lot. The OEM brakes IMO for this car are by far more than acceptable for daily driving.

JsAP1, you're missing the point. Upgraded pads don't look cool behind 19's!

rijowysock, I appreciate your honesty. In that case, I'd say get the s2k cause it looks cool. That's good enough for me

Well, ultimately this is going to be my daily driver... drag racing isn't too much my thing, otherwise I wouldn't really prioritize the S2000, I'd be in something LS1 powered. I would, however, like to try to track or auto-x the car once in a while (to help improve my driving, and well.. it just looks so damn fun!). I just don't want a car that falls flat on its face in the long straights, so I would like some decent power... I guess I'm really going to just have to take one out for a flogging

I have always had a love for small, nimble cars, ever since I had my RX-7... that car made me giggle like a school girl, lol

There are three kinds of car enthusiasts: Drivers, modders, and washers.

Which are you? If you are a driver then the S2k is an awesome car stock... well, maybe with an alignment adjustment. If you like to mod and get a lot of excitement out of it, you should wait until that wears off. Wait until you start auto-xing or doing some other form of real performance driving. Nothing you can do on the street counts. Once you do that, you'll see that spending bucks to make the car faster reaps far fewer rewards then learning how to really drive. The S asks a lot of a driver and if you don't have it, there's no use in modding cause you'll still be slow... but if you have it, holy sh*t, you'll be shocked at what this car can do.

Of course I'm speaking in a general manner and this in no way is meant to be directed at you level of skill. I have no idea what that is.
Im sorry but having my car perform to my liking on the roads that I drive on alone are far more important to me than "racing". Autoxing is racing? You drive around cones for 5 minuites total in one day, compare times, and find out whos driver dick is bigger. I dont need to race anyone on the street, around cones, or on a track to prove anything, I can enjoy a correctly configured high performance car without competing.

I wouldn't quite look at it that way. Racing on the street is flat out stupid. As a safe alternative some choose to autox or track their car to be able to drive it at its full potential.

rijowysock: I'm not going to rain on your 19" wheel parade, but just make sure you think it through before we all see them in the "For Sale" forum.

From what I've learned,

19" machined billet wheels will add a whole bunch of unsprung weight to a car that enjoys being light (relatively speaking) and agile. While billet wheels can be stronger and lighter than forged wheels, this can only be achieved if the wheels are engineered and machined to within an inch of their structural life. I have no idea how experienced you are in structures or machining, but would guess that only an extremely well engineered and designed CNC'd wheel would be lighter than its forged counterpart. And even a poorly constructed 17" wheel will probably be lighter than the lightest 19" rim (C/F not withstanding.)

Otherwise,

All 19" of your huge wheels will translate into a whole bunch of unsprung weight. You'll probably need the SC to overcome the inertia, and even with a BBK your stopping distances may be longer than a perfectly stock S2000. Expect your steering response to be slower as well.

I know you said you just enjoy "cruising" more than "driving" so these things may not matter to you, to each their own. But, if you don't mind me asking, if you're not going to drive it like it's meant to be driven, why get an S2000? Why not make an awesome SC430 or SLK 350? Or drive a pimp 5-series or M45? From what it sounds like, those cars may be better suited for what you're looking for...

Just my 2 cents.

Just buy one, keep it bone stock, and spend the money you would have spent on mods doing that occasional track day or autox that you are talking about. The car does not "fall flat on its face in the long straights," but it's not a 997 GT3 either. If 120-130 mph is enough of a thrill for you, it does just fine "in the long straights".

If that's not enough for you, save the money that you would have spent on mods to use as a down payment on a Porsche.

i heart my db8:

im doing 19's cause i like em and cause im not about all that jazz.. my 19's i make weigh about 13lbs.. but due to thelarge diameter yes they have a heavier rotational mass. but i dont care.

i was looking at m5/m3/porsche 911/sl600/etc but in the long run right now i just want something fun..

so ima settle for a s2000 and SC to around 350rwhp (losing about 40 of that to the 19's) and just enjoy it.. then in 2-3 years ill have my sl600 and running fast and sexier
