I am considering buying a used S2000. While I am quite familar with the basics of the car, I am not sure what or how to tell the differences and details from year to year.

What all was changed for each year? 00 - 03?

Quick and dirty.

Body:

Glass rear window in '02. Leather wrapped shift knob - '02. Suzuku Blue introduced. '03 - white/red became white/tan

Engine:

'02 - Tranny improved. Clutch disk changed. '03 new oil jet bolts on all cars.

You want to be looking for an '02 or an '03, those are the best years of the AP1.
The list of changes between '00 and '01 is tiny.
The list of changes between '02 and '03 is tiny.
The list of changes between '01 and '02 is huge.

- revised tranny
- revised suspension
- glass window
- rear window defroster
- revised gauges display over the tach
- taller 3rd brake light
- new colors
- two pins on floor to hold carpet in place
- vinyl surround in top of tranny and not the tacky floor carpet
- revised tail lights

The list goes on an on, back in the day I remember all the changes we could think of was something like 21 or 23 things. Just buy an '02 or '03.

 

Not completely true, the 4-hole banjo bolts started getting used in late '02, so some '02's have them. Trust me I know, my VIN says I just missed the change over...

 

'01 to '02 had a minor suspension change ... particularly the diameter of
the front swaybar. '02 bar is smaller.

 

I know this is insignificant but I noticed that for 2003's all of the pictures for the AC controls are in white, where as older models the defroster logos are orangish red. I love my 2003!

 

'02 and up's also got an upgraded stereo with seperate tweeters located in the doors.
