Default more torque on the s2200?

it seems as though the s2200 is no longer just a rumor. most reports have said the same thing about the hardtop and 10 more hp, but i just started seeing mentions of more torque. a simple upgrade of 10 hp does not seem to make much sense, but if it is the byproduct of a larger effort to increase torque that would be interesting.

anybody have any solid info on the torque question?

More horsepower requires either more rpm or more torque. Thus, the S2200, if it actually existed (which it doesn't), would have more torque (since more RPM would be very difficult). Assuming redlines and peaks occured at the same time (redline 8900, peak hp 8300, peak torque 7500), the larger motor would go from 152 lb-ft @ 8300 to 158 lb-ft, a gain of 4%. Figure the peak torque would then be about 160 lb-ft.

If there is a 2.2L coming out, I'm not convinced it will be achieved with stroke alone. The stroke would have to be increased to 92.5mm if the bore is unchanged. If the same rod were used, that would require the pin to be moved up on the piston by 4.25mm (There is ample room on the stock piston for this change). However, that would drop the rod ratio from 1.81 to 1.65. I think peak torque would increase considerably more than 4%. However, the piston speed would be dramatically increased with the decreased rod ratio and stroke change.

According to 1/31 issue of Best Car it will be a bored out motor
A bore job alone would require a bore of 91.3 mm from the stock 87 mm. I have no inside knowledge, but I doubt they'd go that oversquare. I still think if a 2.2L motor is forthcoming, it'll be a combo bore and stroke.

This article from autoexpress says about all that we know so far. As the article claims, we should see the coupe later in '03.

Interesting stuff indeed if true, IIRC aren't the tin top versions of a car usually lighter than the equivalent soft top due to the weight of the roof motor?

At any rate, if it emerges it will create an interesting dilema for existing owners.....whether to go for some extra torque and power, but loose the fun of top down motoring.

moor, yes, coupes are usually lighter than convertibles, but that is not necessarily true when you build a coupe from a convertible. Typically they take a coupe and chop off the roof, so they have to reinforce the frame. But unless they "remove" some of that extra bracing that is already there.... it might weigh more as a coupe.
