"an" and "a" are based on how the word sounds. like "i will be there in AN hour" and not "a hour". the letter "s" sounds like "es".

I'm pretty sure "an" is correct, and honestly sounds better to me, but I'm no grammar expert or grammar nazi.

It should actually be a S2000. The grammar rule is that one must use "an" before a word which begins with a vowel. Example: This is an annoying thread on grammar. Hence the saying should be: I don't always go topless, but when I do it's in a S2000.

I know what you mean about how it sounds, but this is what I do for a living. To throw some more salt on the wound, you need a comma after topless because the word "but" is a conjunction, which connects two ideas.

That little article can a PITA. The indefinite article (a/an) could be said to have an in-definitively specified use - not such a clean and simple rule as to be specified by whether it precedes a vowel or a consonant. Were 'S2000' a word, you would be correct. It is correct to say, "My car is a Honda." It is not correct to say, "Here is a H." It is correct to say, "My exhaust system makes a sound I enjoy hearing." It is not correct to say, "A S2000 is a fantastic car!" You would, however, be absolutely correct.

Whatever the case, I'll continue to say "it's an S2000." Where I live, "an" = "un," and it rolls off the tongue much easier

Stay thirsty my friend.
