I'm 6 months and about $1500 into my rebuild. I've done everything except the machine work myself. I intend to have her running again in a few weeks. I had oil starvation and toasted bearings, but no cylinder/piston/ring damage. In the end, it would have been anywhere from $750 to $1500 more expensive to do a swap -- assuming my rebuild goes well. Part of me wishes I had gone that route, but I am mostly happy with my decision to rebuild it myself. I certainly learned a lot in the process.

i know something about this! haha...well it really depends on if you NEED the car. if you do, a swap would be much quicker to get it up and running. but, if u have another ride and dont mind the S sitting for a while, rebuild would be the way to go...but yes like dmw said, more details
